Prologue

Vampires, most who know of them would call them monsters in the shape of man, and so they were hunted, we were hunted. For almost 1000 years my kind have been tracked down, captured, and killed. Since I was a little girl my mother always told me to be careful around humans. She tells me that if the humans were to ever find out that I'm a vampire I would be killed. For a while I thought that she was just telling me those stories just to scare me, but when but when a vampire slayer found out what we were, I realized that the world wasn't the safe place I thought it was.

I still remember that night; it was I night I would never forget. He came in the dead of night and set our house ablaze. At the time I was still only five years old, my mother had come to get me, and when she came she embraced me and held me tight in her arms. Then He came in. He busted down the door, and he saw me and my mother in the center of the room. He reached into his trench coat and pulled out a gun, and he slowly pointed to at me. My mother attempted to shield me from the bullet by thronging herself in the way.

I was scared to death, and I felt that everything in my world was crashing down and taking me with it. Just as the man was about to pull the trigger my father crashed through the wall and tackled him.

"Get out of here!" my father yell to us in a scary serious voice. "GO NOW!" He yelled again. My Mother summoned up every ounce of strength in her being and willed herself to her feet. Holding me she dashed into the hallway. She stopped to look back at me father but, as she tried she couldn't bear to look at what was going on, but for me just before my mother left the house I saw my father standing firm as the hunter aimed his gun at him: the last time I saw my father was the moments leading up to his death.

After my mother and I escaped, she took me to Elder Melchior. Elder Melchior was among the oldest of our kind, and his estate would act as haven to all vampires who need it. Elder Melchior sheltered us there for as long as it took for my mother to come to terms with my father's death. About a month later my mother and I left to start a new life elsewhere. I still remember what my mother said to me the day we left Elder Melchior's estate.

"Alice, I promise you that you will never have to go through something like that ever again".
