A/N: I don't own Tangled or Coldplay, obviously, but this one-shot was inspired by Coldplay's "Fix You". You should seriously listen to it; it's AMAZING. I heard it about a week ago and just had to make a Tangled fanfiction inspired by it. So there you go - a Tangled one-shot inspired by Coldplay's "Fix You". I enjoyed writing it, so I hope you enjoy reading it!

He'd done his best. Or maybe he hadn't. Why hadn't his reflexes been faster? He'd been stuck in reverse his entire life; he'd screwed up so many times. Why couldn't he have done something right? Could this be any worse?
Now the beautiful girl he'd fallen so hard for...the one he was willing to die for...she was crying. She was sobbing over him, begging for him to stay. He wanted to stay with her. He wanted to fix all of her troubles; show her what life was really like. He wanted to hold her. He wanted to hold her and never let her go. He wanted to tell her it was going to be okay. He didn't have the strength in his arms to even do that much. His time was running out. His thoughts were coming in quick, disoriented bursts and fragments, all focused around the girl whose arms encircled him.
"Hey."
She was choking out the lyrics to her healing incantation now. He could hardly will his eyes to stay open, but he was able to feel her soft, short hair underneath his calloused fingers. But he had to get her attention. He had to tell her. He couldn't die without her knowing.
"Hey..." he grimaced, managing to open his eyes and tug on her face. "Rapunzel!"
"What?" she choked. Her gorgeous green eyes were red and filled with tears; her desperate and frantic gaze focusing on his failing brown eyes.
"You were my new dream."
Her lips formed a shaky smile, but inside, she was dying as well. "A-and you were mine."
He was the only one who truly understood her. She was too in love with him to let it go. But was this love? She'd never felt this way over anyone before. And now he was dying in her arms. She wanted desperately for him to stay. She'd been more than willing to be chained up for the rest of her life as long as it meant that the young man in her arms could live.
"I-" he wanted to tell her flatout. He struggled to drag in one last breath; all it would take to release the words that burned on his lips. I love you. He tried to force one more breath, to drag his life out one more second; two if it was possible...but he felt himself fading away. He clutched at life, refusing to fall into the dark abyss waiting for him. The last he saw of her was the tears streaming down her face.
Rapunzel's lips trembled. She'd just lost the one irreplaceable thing in her life. She couldn't fix him. She mumbled the rest of the healing incantation, hardly feeling her lips moving or the tears slipping down her face.
A flicker of light shone from the rough, bloody tear in Eugene's stomach, catching the desolate princess's eye. What..?
The lights streamed upwards, intertwining with one another; wrapping around Rapunzel and finally exploding into the shape of a lily above them, igniting Eugene's very bones. The light disappeared, guiding the man back into consciousness and back to Rapunzel.
Rapunzel watched his face, almost too afraid to hope.
"Eugene?" she uttered her beloved's name, allowing her excitement to mount when she saw his eyelids flicker.
