Hello this is my third (third I know three times lucky I hope) attempt now if there are any errors plz tell me oh and before I forget I own nothing just to make that clear :)
They say old ghosts never die. It's true, even after two hundred years he can't forget his, even building a new identity and forging a new life after what happened on mars, the past is always there on the fringes of his mind, the voices whispering on the edge of his sanity. To the crew of the enterprise he is Leonard McCoy but to him, McCoy is only a mask because he can never forget his past, never become free of his demons, never change who and what he is.
Every night is the same. Olduvai, Sam, chromosome-24, the creatures, his friends being killed, running, heavy breathing, the screams of the dying, the pounding of footsteps against metal as they fled, the growls of creatures as they hunted and the screeching of bullets as they fired to kill, watching his commander kill innocents and the death of the kid, watching as Sarge became something else, the fight between him and Sarge, his destruction of the ark, reliving the night that changed his life, the night that ruined everything, the night that killed John Grimm and gave birth to the Reaper.
But this night is different, something has changed, he can feel it in bones, hear it sing in his blood and taste it in the air. It began as they all do watching his team mates die and then come back and having to kill them along with the scientists that caused all of this, then it starts to change, the scientists and his teammates start to become the friends and comrades of Leonard McCoy and when he faces of with Sarge, it is no longer Sarge but Jim Kirk, it is Jim who is mutating into a monster, Jim who is so heroic it will get him killed one day, is becoming the thing which has stalked his dreams and frolicked in his nightmares for two hundred years.
He stares, Jim, no the creature he reminds himself stares back, before the fight he knows will happen, as it always does he can only ask why, the answer he receives is possibly the most frightening because the creature only smiles, a malicious and delightful smile and that smile says many things but the one which the Reaper sees, the one that stands out is the smile of a killer, the smile of one who lives to kill and he sees this smile because it is one he once wore, the creature leaps and attacks and he can only do the same.
The fight goes on for some time and then the creatures gains the upper hand, with a strangle hold around his neck, the creature tightens its hold, tighter and tighter, he struggles to breathe and the last words he hears are 'old ghosts never die Reaper; you can't hide behind a mask forever.'
In his quarters on the enterprise Leonard McCoy awakens, covered in sweat and partly still in the realm of his nightmares. He knows he is awake and safe until he returns to sleep the next night but the feelings remain, he tries to live life as normal but those words spoken were so very true, old ghosts never die and he has chosen, he can no longer hide behind a mask, he has to face the monster of his past head on like the soldier he is, not hide like some coward to afraid of his nightmares to see the truth.
And the truth is he has been running and hiding for too long. It's time to be who he is, not someone he created to hide from who he is. He will tell his friends of his past if them believe him or not, he doesn't care and then he will leave to face his past without the present making it more difficult to bear.
As they say old ghosts never die and neither will the Reaper.
