Disclaimer: I don't own Prince of Tennis, nor anything recognizable to the canon anime or manga.
Author's notes: I was doing a rewatch of the entire series, and I saw this one moment in time, where I thought I could expand on a minor character's thoughts at the moment. As such, this fanfiction is written in third omniscient, however it never actually leaves the mindset of Sanada Genchirou.

Falling Drops of Fate
By Dragona 2007
Sanada Genchirou surveyed the weather, as he served tennis balls, timed to falling drops of water. It was an exercise that very few amateur tennis players could ever hope to accomplish. He knew that it was pointless to warm up, as the skies hadn't appeared to lighten all day, let alone any time soon. The most likely end result was quite clear: the postponement of today's match. However, Genchirou was determined to keep at the exercise, until the his educated prediction was confirmed. It was one of the many ways that Seichii said that he was too set in his ways. The phrase of his friend and captain was a kinder way of saying that he was stubborn, but then again, Genchirou couldn't ever imagine his recovering captain ever vocalizing any phrase that was less than kind, or at least polite. Yet, not even Seichii could make him change that much. Yes, he, Sanada Genchirou, was stubborn, and this was one his few "flaws" that he was happy to admit to possessing.
He served the next ball, as he heard someone approach by the dulled clinking that could only be made by multiple tennis racquets in a tennis bag. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw that person to be the Seigaku freshman, the substitute in their match again Hyotei, three weeks ago. Surely one of his own teammates would inform him of the matches outcome, instead of using the opposing school's freshman as an errand boy. Then again, Niou was rather notorious for his mischief, and it certainly fit that Niou would dare to coerce a freshman to deliver a message that was supposed to be his to deliver.
When no words came, and the freshman removed his own red racket, Genchirou dismissed his previous thoughts and served the ball, as the water droplet left the leaf. Unsurprisingly, he didn't miss the leaf, like his other countless serves, since it was announced that the officials were deliberating about the timing of today's match. However, surprisingly enough, the freshman managed to burst his own droplet of water. Genchirou ignored it, chocking the shot up to luck, as he readied another ball. Another drop fell, and Genchirou served once more. This time the results were vastly different, as the freshman served after him, spearing his droplet of water. No, the freshman wasn't here because of anyone but himself, as evidenced by the challenge. The arrogance of the freshman to dare to even attempt to intercept his serve was something that needed to be addressed, at the very least.
Genchirou turned to the freshman, unable to ignore the challenge, and spoke in a plain tone. "Do you have something to say?" Thus, the fates of two tennis teams from two different middle schools were determined by six words, and not in the way that either would have expected, at that moment in time.
