To Hold a Sword
Big, sparse drops of water fell in torrents when I saw it in her purple orbs, the one thing I never wanted to see in her eyes – fear.
"Hollow", her eyes seemed to read. She wasn't moving and I could tell that she wasn't with me right now. She was going back to a certain rainy night some centuries ago, reliving her worst nightmare. The fear in her eyes soon travelled to her whole face and one thing registered in my mind as I watched her slowly embrace herself, pulling her knees to her chest as if it could offer some sort of protection.
I knew it that very moment. She was afraid of me.
I tried to ignore the familiar feeling of pain surging through my chest as I squinted to search for our hidden foe. When I finally caught sight of him I threw caution to the wind as I charged, blade poised for the kill, though my mind was elsewhere, opening old wounds and heartaches. As I ran I felt the tears building up at the corners of my masked face's eyes and for once I was grateful for the rain.
I couldn't protect her without holding a sword.
But then I couldn't embrace her while holding one either.
Owari.
