Temple of the gods:

"Aurora, you do know that this Monday is the day of the gods and you haven't chosen your gift. What is it that you desire my goddess?" One of Aurora's faithful servants asked with a bow.

"This is a decision that I have been considering for many years. It is not to be taken lightly my servant, although I do have my eyes on a being down in a land called Alagaesia. I think that am in need of a pet however. Marcus has this creature called a gryphon I believe."

"Is a gryphon what you desire my Aurora?" The servant asked quickly.

"No. I want an intelligent creature. Not that gryphons aren't smart, but I want a creature that I can talk to. Only a few creatures can do that."

"What do you desire?"

"I desire a female dragon by the name of Saphira. She'll make a great pet. Bring her to me on the day of the gods."

"What if she refuses?"

"She won't have a choice. If she won't come, take her by force but do not hurt her in any way."

"I will return will this, Saphira. I shall not fail you!"

With that, the young servant girl vanished and appeared just a few miles from where Eragon and Saphira were preparing for a nights rest.

Back at the Varden (Shortly after Burning Plains)

Saphira, you won't ever leave me will you? Eragon asked as he scratched her gingerly on the neck. I don't know what I would do without you.

Saphira chuckled gently causing Eragon, who was leaning on her side, to smile. What kind of a question is that little one? You know I would give the world for you.

I guess you're right. That was a foolish question. I am sorry for asking. Saphira, why did you choose me? There must have been countless others that would suit you better.

Eragon, I chose you because you had a good heart. I knew you would be perfect for me and no one else could bring me the joy that you do. I love you Eragon and nothing will ever change that.

Saphira, Roran wishes to travel to Helgrind tomorrow. Are you up for a flight?

Well, if I am to fly with several people, I will need a good nights rest. Are you going to sleep with me or are you going to go to your tent?

I would prefer to sleep with you any day Saphira.

Goodnight little one. I love you. Saphira cooed as she nuzzled him gently with her snout.

I love you too Saphira.

Slowly, Saphira pulled Eragon gently by the neck up to her side and lowered her wing over his body. Before too long, Eragon drifted off to sleep, not knowing that this would be one of the last nights that he would ever spend with Saphira.
