Resignation. That was all Niles felt as he sat in the Winnebago during Daphne's wedding. That was one event he couldn't see himself sitting through, for fear of breaking down, so he would sit this one out. How he would explain his absence, he didn't know and he didn't particularly care. Mel would just have to wait. He knew she wouldn't particularly buy his explanation that he was putting on insect repellent but he didn't care anymore. He just didn't care. Nothing mattered now that he knew that Daphne loved him but wouldn't be with him for whatever reasons. It was funny- the same nobility that attracted him to her was what was now keeping them apart. He could choke on the irony.
Niles felt a bittersweet ending at the romance that was not meant to be, the great romance of his life, which only included three kisses in seven years. Three kisses he could live the rest of his life on, and it looked like he might have to. Where was he to go? What was he to do now? Oh, he supposed he could make a go of his marriage to Mel but what was the point? He didn't love her any more than he loved Maris, so he couldn't spend the rest of his life pretending that he did. So the best thing for him to do was end it before anyone else got hurt by his cowardice. No use in stringing Mel along, hurting her in the process when the truth would only hurt her.
Niles was sitting there alone in this thoughts when he heard a knock on a door, asking him if he might be free for a date. Disbelief set in, followed by elation. Never in his life would he guess that Daphne would leave Donny at the altar for him. He, Niles Crane, got the girl! Who would have thought that? This was the most perfect day of his life. How could a day that started in heartbreak wind up in total perfection? He didn't know, and he didn't care. He must have done something right, in order to end up in the arms of this goddess. She was a vision in her wedding dress, and he couldn't help but picture himself with her and her wedding dress. But he was getting carried away with himself. For now he could dream a little smaller, and just imagine holding Daphne in his arms. And now he didn't have to wonder anymore. This time, his dream had came true.
The end
