"Oh, we're friends now?"
"Well, I won't tell anyone if you won't."
She'd heard them say it. It sounded like they had been joking, but she knew that behind the façade they really meant it.
They were friends.
Lois Lane and Clark Kent.
Whoever would have thought?
Not Lana, that's for sure.
She had called Chloe that night, wondering where Clark was.
"Probably with Lois, he spends so much time with her these days!" Chloe had laughed down the phone.
Lana had laughed with her, albeit nervous uneasy laughter.
When Lana had returned from Paris she had met the feisty brunette, Lois Lane, and decided she was quite a character. Someone she would never have paired Clark with in a million years.
But then she'd seen them together, and her perception of the army brat had changed. She and Clark were always arguing, but in a playful way. He would take a dig at her, and she'd reply with some snappish comment that would make him sulk, but not enough to retaliate and not speak to her.
"It's
funny, isn't it? After everything we've been through, I thought it
would take us longer to get over it."
"Us?"
"You and Lois."
"Lois? She's bossy. She's stuck up, she's rude. I can't stand her."
"The best ones always start that way."
She had no idea this was only the beginning.
Lana had, in fact, predicted the future there and then, unknowingly to herself.
Sure, she had been the one for Clark during their teen years. They were in love. They were special to one another.
They were friends too.
But not the same kind of friends as Lois and Clark were.
Lana had always been the-girl-next-door. The girl Clark had always had a crush on. The girl you were friends with but wanted to be something more. That was the kind of friend Lana was to Clark. They were in a relationship. Things were different.
Lois and Clark…
Lois and Clark had barriers. Barriers that no one else could break down.
Not parents, or Chloe or Lana.
They had secrets. They were stubborn. They didn't let anyone in easily.
But somehow, without them knowing they had done so, they had allowed each other to break the barriers down.
Lois didn't know Clark's secret, but she knew more about the real Clark Kent than most people did. She knew the insecurities, the hopes, the fears. She knew him.
Clark didn't share these things willingly. Lana could never get him to open up.
But somehow Lois did. Chloe joked that she bullied him into it. But she, like many others, knew that they had some kind of bond. One that could break through the barriers and let a little sunlight in.
"Oh, we're friends now?"
"Well, I won't tell anyone if you won't."
Lana had stood outside the barn that night, and heard their conversation.
She was hurt. She admitted it. Clark and Lois had offered information to each other. They had opened up.
Lana had spent four years trying to pry the tiniest scrap of inside emotions from Clark Kent, and Lois Lane had bustled in with her care-free, laid-back attitude and made him trust her, even if he didn't know that he did.
"The best ones always start that way."
If only she knew.
