"James?" ssked Sirius.
"Wha-?" responded James Potter, snapping out of a daze.
"You've been staring at Evans for the past five minutes." stated Sirius.
"So?" asked James, smirking.
"I's kind of weirding me out." said Sirius.
"And why would that be, my dear friend?" asked James.
"Because, it's not normal." said Sirius, rolling his eyes. "Besides, generally the point of sitting with your mates at lunch is to have someone to talk to. All you've done for the last week is stare at Lily."
"I've done other stuff as well." said James.
"Like?"
"Walk, breathe, sleep, eat, etcetera."
Sirius rolled his eyes again, and shoved a forkfull of food into his mouth.
"If you like Evans so much, just ask the bloody girl out." said Sirius, swallowing his lunch.
"What?" exclaimed James. "I can't do that!"
"Yes you can!" said Sirius. "Give me three good reasons why you couldn't just walk up to Lily Evans and ask her out."
"Well, she hates me, she'd say no, and I'm convinced she fancies Snivellus anyway." said James sadly.
"And, you're only in First Year, mate," butted in Reginald Cattermole, a Gryffindor two years ahead of the Marauders. "I thought girls were annoying weirdos, put on the planet to infuriate boys when I was in First Year."
"You're an annoying weirdo, Cattermole, go away." said James. "It's none of your business."
"Whatever you want, Potter." said Reginald, who shoved the last few mouthfuls of food into his mouth, and got up, walking out into the corridors.
"Look, James, what's the worst that could happen?" asked Sirius.
"She says no." replied James.
"Merlin, James, that would be bloody terrible." said Sirius. "She says no, you tell her tomorrow I made you do it because you lost a bet. Problem solved."
"That's actually a good idea," said James. "But..."
"James Potter, are you Prongs or freaking Bambi?" asked Sirius irritably.
"I'm Prongs." said James. "I'm Prongs, the Marauder!" he repeated, as he rose up from the bench.
"Yes you are!" said Sirius. "Now go ask out Lily Evans!"
James walked down the table, tapped Lily on the shoulders, and spoke to her. Lily said something in reply, and went back to her lunch. James came trotting back to is seat across from Sirius.
"So?" asked Sirius.
"She said no." said James.
"Ah well," said Sirius. "Allways next time."
"And the next." added James.
"And the next." said Sirius.
He had no idea how right he was...
