Human Night
Rest on me, let us close your eyes, and mine.
For one moment, sleep with the human night.
Pablo Neruda – Sonnet LXXXVI

You have managed to use your mind to keep your heart from feeling anything for so long. You lived by using your brain and not let your decisions be dictated by your heart. It is necessary to keep yourself alive and to keep yourself from ever doubting or regretting any of your actions.
Feelings are like vervain to your system; they slow you down, distract you and make you experience more pain than you would ever like to feel again. And the only times when you ever show any emotions is when you can benefit from them; when you fool another unsuspecting human with only the memory of love or happiness to lure them into your web and use them to still your never-ending hunger.
Through the decennia you've perfected the art of turning off your feelings; succeeded in building a strong wall around your undead heart. But now that wall is crumbling and you have no idea when that has started; you didn't even realise it was happening until the first real damage began to show.
And you can only blame her. All of the enemies you have ever faced may have wounded your body, crushed you to an almost end of your very existence, but none have ever come this close to touching your soul. And she had; almost effortlessly she has found her way to the very heart of you.
And what shocks you the most is that you like it. You like how her stubbordness makes you angry and fear for her safety. You almost crave her attention and feel your heart swell when you make her smile or when you manage to get under her skin so much that fire shoots from her eyes.
The simple fact that she knows exactly what you are and still trusts you enough to follow you, to lay here life in your hands, to be alone with you and not fear for her life, has shattered you from the inside out, has set feelings free that you thought you had erased long ago.
Ever fibre of your being tells you to run, screams from the inside that this girl is gonna destroy you, urges you to reinforce your defense system. But again you find yourself sitting here with her. For one night allowing yourself to remember again what it felt like to be human, what it felt like to feel for some one else.
Just for one night.
