AN: Heard the news this morning and felt all melancholy. Rest in peace, David Bowie.
Sarah felt it when it happened.
She called Toby during her lunch break to let him know she was planning to drive down for the weekend. He didn't have to ask why.
They stepped through the mirror together, hand in hand, the woman who had been the Champion and the boy who had been Prince. The Labyrinth lay below them, silent and waiting. The whole Underground felt like a giant beast holding its breath.
They saw no one as they walked. The paths were deserted and didn't shift or change on them the way that they normally would have. Even the goblin city felt empty. They reached the castle in far less than thirteen hours.
Sarah and Toby stood before the Goblin King's throne, still hand in hand in the silence. Toby let go of his sister's hand and stepped back.
Sarah looked at him, "Are you sure?"
Toby nodded once, sharply. "He would have wanted it this way. He might have made me crown prince, but he wanted you to be queen. I only know how to rule them. You know how to make them love and fear you."
Sara smiled sadly, but nodded in agreement. She turned and sat on the throne.
The Underground breathed.
They could hear the distant sounds of the goblin city coming back to life. Sarah could feel the changes her will and power would make to the Labyrinth. She could feel the changes the Labyrinth would make to her.
Toby bowed, crown prince to queen.
"The king is dead. Long live the queen."
