The boy screamed as loud as he could. He was sure he had heard it this time. Heavy breathing and it was in his bedroom. He screamed again.
The door swung open and a hand reached inside to flick on the lights. His mother ran in so fast it was as if she was gliding through the air to be by his side. She wrapped herself around him to protect him from any dangers that might attack. "What is it? What's wrong?" she whispered urgently trying to sooth her terrified son.
"He was here again. I know he was. I saw him this time," the small boy cried. His tears burned his eyes as they fell. This was the fourth night in a row his nightmares woke him up and each time they seemed so real.
His mother swept her eyes around his room. She checked under his bed and inside the closet but they were both empty. Then she knelt on the floor in front of him and wiped away his tears with one hand. "Dean, my sweetheart, there is nothing in your room. There are no monsters, no ghosts and no strange men with yellow eyes. Believe me when I tell you your room is protected and nothing can get inside."
The boy nodded. He was glad to hear this. It was the same thing she told him every night and he knew when he heard it, it meant he was safe. "Can you read to me, mommy?" he looked up into her eyes. She looked worn out and he knew he had woken her out of a deep sleep but still he wanted her to stay with him. He loved to hear her stories. Her voice would get so low he would barely breathe to hear her speak.
His mother smiled warmly and took the top book from the side table. She lay down on the bed and snuggled beside him. She wrapped her arm around his neck, bringing him closer to her. She then opened the pages to reveal drawings of beautiful angels watching over sleeping children. Dean turned his head and moved down to where his ear rested over her stomach. He also loved to hear his brother.
