A/N: My first fanfiction in over 2 years. I am a new "Castle" viewer and have been catching up on old episodes. After seeing the "You smell like cherries" moment, I just had to get inside Beckett's head.
"You smell like cherries."
There was something in the way he said it... Normally, she would have rolled her eyes, stood up straight, and scolded him with a terse, "Stop sniffing me, Castle." But there was something different in his voice. It was something soft, something like delight, and a little bit of adoration. In her curiosity, she turned to him and met his eyes. In them she didn't see his usual light, confident flirting. What she saw in his eyes matched what she'd heard in his voice. It made her pause, their faces just a few inches apart. He held her gaze with intensity. She was drowning in his eyes and she couldn't get out. For maybe the first time, she consciously, briefly, entertained the idea that maybe there was something more to what they have, now that he was looking at her like that, and her breath was suspended in her lungs, and something fluttered in her stomach.
She just might kiss him. Against her better judgment, she didn't think she could stop herself. And as soon as she was aware that she'd suddenly shifted her gaze to his mouth-
"Hey! We got a hit on the-"
The moment was effectively broken, thanks to Esposito and Ryan and their perfect timing.
Her embarrassment and denial hid her disappointment.
