Prologue: Engulfed in Flames
A little girl sat huddled in a corner afraid, and alone. All she remembered was a tall, slender man reading a few words out of her favorite book, and a monster had emerged. Like all great books, each one had to have a villain, and that just happened to be who the monster was.
Flames licked the wood as greedily as a dog laps up water. She lay huddled there, head deep in her knees as she sobbed quietly. She looked at her shiny red shoes that she had gotten from her mother only yesterday, and held them close to her chest. Somebody, surely would save her from this horrible death?
But the more she asked that, the more ridiculous it sounded. Who would go into a house on fire just to rescue one little girl? All she had were her red shoes and her Welsh corgi puppy, Biscuit. Biscuit licked her face trying to cheer her up. But even the dog's licks would be no help know. As the flames reached closer, the smoke got stronger.
The gray smoke spread around her wrapping itself like a snake around the girl and her dog. She started to cough, hacking the smoke out of her lungs with by pounding her chest. Her eyes started to water, and she hugged the little puppy dearly, as they closed their eyes and were engulfed in flames.
