Crisis
I never really considered myself a person. I was just a shadow, surrounded by moving, living, breathing people. It has been that way my whole life, I guess.
Never, in my entire "life," have I ever met someone like me, I have never met a fellow shadow.
That is, until I met him.
He seemed like a normal person at first. Clear blue eyes, red hair, tall. Just a normal high-school student. I gave no interest in him. He voice had a bit of British accent to it, but, other than that, he was normal, something had never had the privilege of being.
I'd always been an oddball. The day I meet him, I was a light blonde-haired person and I wore a light blue shirt and black jeans. I walked into my class, I had the usual neutral look on my face as I took my seat next to Rick and prepared for the lesson.
About half way into the period, Miss. Caroline, my guidance counselor, came into the room.
"Hello, Mr. Freeman."
"Oh, hello, Caroline. What's up?"
"Well, I have a pair of new students that are in your class."
I looked up, and there he was, in all his glory. He had a girl standing next to him. I had seen her around before. She works at Aperture, a boutique in the mall.
"This is Wheatley and Chell. They will be joining you guys from now on."
"Okay, thank you Caroline."
…
Months passed. And soon, it was June and the last day of school was drawing near.
Wheatley and Chell (who I learned had a full name; Michelle) were best friends. Practically. I didn't really talk much. And whenever I did, it always came out as a passive-aggressive comment, so I learn to keep my mouth shut.
One day, three of us (me, Wheatley and Chell) were put on a group assignment together. This is where the madness starts.
Turned out Chell was mute and had a dry erase board and some markers to communicate with people. And Wheatley was a bit of a moron but, somehow, he still passed (Barely, but still).
Chell ended up becoming my friend/enemy. We insulted each other constantly but we had each others backs.
After about half a school year and a whole summer of friendship, I learned something about Wheatley. Something that made me realize I wasn't the only shadow in this world.
It was his parents. His mother and father used him as a pawn to get money from the government. It had worked in England for only so long and they, eventually, were cut off.
"Is that all I am to you? A pawn just to get cash?!"
His mother rolled her eyes. "Oh please. Don't be such a melodramatic, Wheatley."
"I'm your son. You're supposed to protect me and take care of me not because you have to but because you want to."
That was the eye opener for me. I knew that he needed help, so, with the help of Chell, I did just that.
Eventually, he came to he senses and left his home and stayed with Chell for the rest of the school year.
I'm happy for them, they got married a few years after we graduated.
They are, to this day, my best friends.
I'm not a shadow anymore.
My name is Glados Johnson and I am a Person.
