Just my idea of Matsuda's thoughts, on Light's 'Betrayal'.

Matsuda didn't know quite what made him pull the trigger.

Light had been counted as one of his friends. He'd known Light to be smarter than himself, but he'd liked the younger man. The chief---The chief had been like a father to him, the father he'd never had, not after his own had left his mother pregnant and alone.

Chief Yagami had given him a father figure to look up to, and now he was dead, and his son was Kira. A killer. A homicidal maniac with a severe God-complex.

The Yagami's had never been anything but kind to him, a friend, a father, and Sayu. Matsuda wasn't sure just what Sayu was, but she was incredibly important to him.

He looked upon the shell that had once been a boy, just in college, top of his class. Future ruined.

He heard shouts. He took in the watch, the blood, the raving, animalistic lunatic. He wasn't even aware that he'd shot the gun until blood came, it leapt from the wound like splashing water…but…it wasn't water. It was red. Blood.

He could hear himself shouting. Was it really him? Or was it just his mind going to pieces?

He'd killed his father. Light Yagami, the beloved child, had killed Soichiro.

Light just seemed transfixed, as if he hadn't realized that he could bleed.

And then he started screaming.

As if he didn't realize that he was human, not God, and humans could bleed.

More shots followed, the young police officer took in nothing but the lost man in front of him, eyes wild, expression raving, Matsuda felt only pity.

Then he was grabbed from behind. His shot went awry. The shot that would've ended it all.

He could hear someone talking to Near behind him. Telling him that it was over. It wasn't. How could they say that? It would never end. Matsuda knew he'd be reliving these past few moments, these past few years, for the rest of his life.

It would never end.

There was a whisper. For Misa. For Takada. The two women who had followed the madman.

Matsuda wished that he could believe in Misa's innocence. The lively girl would never be the same.

He could feel his heart break.

As the creature limped from his sight, Matsuda couldn't help but wonder if even the innocence that had come with childhood would go to hell. Light Yagami should go free. To where a dark eyed, childish, super detective would be waiting for him.

Kira, however, Kira deserved worse than Hell.

All he could feel was pity for the rabid man, and the knowledge that Ryu— that L had been right all along.
