Title: Honeymoon
Author: sockie1000
Summary: "So, I guess the honeymoon is over now, huh?" Danny asked dejectedly. ~~ Friendship, NOT slash.
Author's note: I wrote this for Cokie316 because she is awesome. And a good trooper. And a great beta. And a terrific writer. And an even better friend. And for all of those reasons, I owe her big time. This story is a little down-payment.
"So, I guess the honeymoon is over now, huh?" Danny asked dejectedly.
Steve looked over, confused. "What?"
"The honeymoon," Danny replied, waving his hand around in the air. "You know, two years. We've been together two years now. So I guess the newness has worn off."
Steve's face scrunched up, trying to comprehend. "What are you talking about?"
Danny shrugged. "You. And me."
Steve looked even more confused.
"What is it?" Danny continued, undeterred. "Am I not exciting enough? Hmm?" Then he frowned. "Or is my conversation not stimulating enough anymore?"
"Your conversation is fine, D." Steve replied, trying hard to follow.
"Well, it has to be something," Danny commented sadly. "Because I thought we had a good thing going."
"We do, Danny," Steve replied, more perplexed than ever.
Danny sighed heavily and looked out the window for a few moments before replying.
"Then why are you always trying to replace me?"
"What?" Steve asked, stunned. "I'm not trying to replace you!"
Danny shrugged, still looking out the window at the scenery. "You could have fooled me. There's someone new around every week now."
"Like Who?" Steve demanded.
"Well, your mom for starters…"
Steve rolled his eyes. "She's my Mom, Danny. Whom I thought was dead and hadn't seen for 20 years."
Danny shrugged. "Maybe. And then there was August March."
Steve snorted. "A convicted felon and murderer."
"Which makes it all the worse." Danny added. "And now Cath…"
"Who is my girlfriend. And has been since before you and I even met."
"I guess." Danny looked back out of the window in silence.
Suddenly, realization dawned on Steve. He looked over at his partner, dumbfounded.
"Are you trying to tell me you're jealous?"
Danny sighed and waited a beat before replying, "I don't know. Maybe." Then he glanced at Steve and continued. "It's just… it's always been me next to you. And now that's it someone else, it's just… weird."
Steve sighed. "I know it is, Danny." He caught Danny's eye before continuing. "But it doesn't change our relationship. You're still my partner. And my best friend."
"Really?"
Steve nodded. "Really."
"So nobody's trying to take my place?"
Steve smiled. "Nobody's trying to take your place."
Danny blew out a breath, smiled back, and visibly relaxed. "Good."
"Good." Steve nodded, relieved to have the conversation over. "I'm glad we got that cleared up." Then he looked up and saw Catherine coming down the sidewalk. He gestured to Danny with his head. "Do you mind?"
Danny opened the door of the Camaro, got out, and then climbed into the back seat. He left the passenger door open for Catherine, who was almost to the car.
"You know, there is something you could do to make this better," Danny commented as he tried to get comfortable, yet again, in his new spot in the back seat.
"What?" Steve asked.
"We could both lose our places." Danny offered, trying to conceal a sly grin.
Steve smelled a trap. "Meaning?"
"Meaning I could drive."
Steve snorted. "Not a chance."
"Hey!" Danny protested, still grinning. "Where's the love?"
"Haven't you heard?" Steve grinned at Danny in the rearview mirror. "The honeymoon's over."
