Disclaimer: As ever, the characters and world aren't mine.

The grass is brown and dry beneath Katara's feet. There is nothing left of the trees which surrounded her but splinters, shattered stumps. The air is so dry that Katara's nose bleeds as she draws in air--so dry that she can hardly breathe at all.

It isn't enough.

She's about to lose, about to die.

It is there, at the very edge of her senses, that Katara feels the pull and promise of water. She swivels on the balls of her feet, arches her arms overhead, and calls on every last drop of water she can feel. She is the master of her element, and the water comes to her, makes her strong, saves her.

Later, she passes a flock of birds, shriveled and nearly unrecognizable in death.
