Summary: Anakin seeks solace in his new Master
Obi-wan woke to a soft sobbing sound. He blinked in the darkness of his room until his eyes finally adjusted to hue and he was able to focus on the small form of a child at the end of his bed. He sat bolt upright, pushing his blankets aside and running his hand through his wild bed hair.
"Anakin whatever is the matter?" He asked concerned commanding the lights to a low splash of illumination with the Force.
The little forlorn boy flashed his deep blue eyes at his new Master before wiping his streaming tears away with the back of his hand; his sleepwear was too long for him and the sleeves and legs crept over his hands and toes making him a piteous sight. The tiny braid swung loosely at his ear and Obi-wan smiled warmly towards his charge. He kicked his feet over the edge of the bed and rubbed his face to awaken his senses.
"Come here my young Padawan" He beckoned opening his arms for Anakin.
The small child padded across the room to stand in front of his Master. Obi-wan pulled him paternally between his legs to hug him tight against his chest, rubbing his hand soothingly over the soft skin of the boy's back to comfort him. Anakin buried his sniffles into Obi-wan's sleep shirt and wrapped his arms as far round the older man as he could reach.
"I miss my Mom" Anakin whispered tearfully into the fresh fabric of the night shirt.
Obi-wan had guessed as much; Anakin had had trouble settling into life at the Temple since his arrival a couple of months previously. He smiled sympathetically and ruffled the young boy's choppy Padawan cut before lifting him onto his knee.
"I can't stop you from missing your Mother Anakin, we all miss those that we love and are no longer with" His tortured heart's thoughts turned to Qui-gon; his death still so very fresh in Obi-wan's mind "But as Jedi we learn to release our emotions into the Force and rejoice for our loved ones. In time you will learn this skill and then your pain will ease and your nightmares end"
Obi-wan's voice was resolute as if it were absolute fact, and hopeful, and placating. Anakin believed in his words and a glimmer of an encouraged smile escaped him. Obi-wan hugged him into his body again as his mind drifted off to a time before he knew what loss truly meant. He was brought forth from his revere as the boy became restless and wiggly.
"Are you okay now?" Obi-wan questioned positively as Anakin slipped to his feet, the legs of his pants curling under them. His gaze sank to the floor and he became the picture of innocence, a little lost boy; it was disarming. Obi-wan made a big deal of rolling his eyes and shaking his head before picking the child up and throwing him back down on the bed with a bounce.
Anakin crawled beneath the sheets before his Master could change his mind with a charmingly chaste grin painted on his boyish features. Obi-wan dimmed the lights again and climbed back into the bed himself, accosted immediately by Anakin's small frame before he'd even had chance to get comfortable. He wrapped a strong arm around his fragile Padawan warmly and relaxed into the delightful feeling of not being alone.
"Just for tonight" Obi-wan whispered as he felt Anakin's tiny chest rise and fall against his own; and he meant it, just as he had every night since Anakin's arrival on Coruscant.
