Letter from Mr. Collins to Elizabeth and Darcy

My Dear Mr. and Mrs. Darcy,

It has been my pleasure to hear the news about your wedding. I believe it occurred last week and I am sorry to say that Mrs. Collins and I did not receive an invitation to the reception. Nevertheless, Mrs. Collins and I could not be happier for the both of you, although Mrs. Collins and I are extremely happy together as well. However, it is a shame to hear that you were not married in my parish at Hunsford because as you both are aware, I am part a member of the clergy there.

Over the past few days, I have been recollecting on the events that passed last November when I, myself, asked Elizabeth for her hand in marriage though I consistently asked for her hand, the graciously denied which I am very thankful for. Although I am most positive that Elizabeth would have been very happy with me, it would have been a shame to have a mark on my name because of my association with a family with such a disgraceful daughter. Lydia's actions barely escaped putting a large burden on the family name and I fear that her actions were in part to her upbringing by Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. However, I believe at some point that there is nothing left for parents to do and eventually a devilish spirit overtook her person. I should hope that when Charlotte and I have children that they are nothing like Lydia, which I am sure they will not be. Mr. Darcy, it is surprising to see you risk your honor and integrity for love, especially to a girl from a family so below your own. Thus so, I respect your decision and I could not be happier for the both of you.

Mrs. Collins and I both expect that you both will visit us in the near future. We have such a beautiful home and I would love for you both to experience it. I know you will find it quite delightful. Mrs. Collins is an extremely lucky lady because she married a man who is able to provide for her every need. The house has everything that a woman could want. Mrs. Collins even has her own parlor that I am not allowed to enter. Also, when you both visit we will all most definitely pay a visit to Lady Catherine and her darling daughter. Lady Catherine is such an enjoyable character for she is one of the nicest and kindest hosts that one could come across, except for of course Mrs. Collins and myself. I am sure that Lady Catherine would be more then happy to see you both, as she is pleasant to everyone. We visit with her very often and are clearly some of her favorite guests. Please be sure to bring your best clothes to wear when we go to visit her, that is if you choose to visit Mrs. Collins and I, which we do hope that you will. Also, when you visit, I will be sure to show you my garden that Mrs. Collins encourages me to work on. Even though it takes away from the time I am able to spend with her, by tending to my garden regularly, I am able to grow such delightful vegetables.

One day, Mrs. Collins and I hope to receive the invitation to visit the Darcy estate. I have heard of all the wonderful things that are present on the estate and I am sure that I can offer insight on how to make it better, such as adding a garden for Mr. Darcy to tend to. Of course your garden would not be as good as mine is, but I am sure that I could help you make something similar.

Anyways, this letter is taking me far to long to write and is taking away precious time that I could be spending with my darling wife, I am sure that she misses me dearly. I hope to hear from either of you soon and know you are always welcome to visit us.

Yours Truly,

Mr. Collins
