Chapter 1: Gradually Voluntarily
"I heard you were feeling under the weather.
Maybe these chocolates will help you feel better."
Merlock stared at the note. It was the third one he'd gotten, and, like the others, it was
unsigned.
"What's in the box, Merlock?" Bindi asked, hovering over him.
"Chocolates." Merlock replied, a little distracted. Just who was sending him these notes and
gifts? Everytime he tried to analyze them, he was called away on a mission, or something else
came up. It was a mystery he didn't have time to solve. Besides, Bindi had already eaten most of the chocolates.
Off on another mission, this time to get the Time Shifter Snip, who was helping the Barber of Seville. As always, Merlock waited for the just the right time (i.e. the nick of) to jump in and save the day. From his treetop perch he watched the battle, when he suddenly noticed a flash from higher in the tree. There, a few branches above him, sat a girl, no older than 12, pink buckled shoes on her feet. Her legs dangled as she happily cleaned her camera, unaware that Merlock was watching her. He had seen her a few times before on his missions, but everytime he tried to talk to her, she disappeared.
At that moment she looked down and looked straight into Merlock's eyes. Her look changed from delight to terror, and she scrambled out of the the tree and ran off.
Merlock ran after her, determined to find out who she was and why she kept showing up. He quickly overtook her, so quickly that she didn't even realize it until she discovered she wasn't running anymore, merely moving her feet back and forth. Merlock had lifted her a few inches off the ground.
"OOO! Put me down!" the girl cried, flailing her arms in an attempt to get free. Merlock unceremoniously complied. (A/N: That means he dropped her.)
"Please...please..." the girl sat on the the ground and sniffled.
Merlock sat on the ground next to her. "I won't hurt you."
"Please...would you....please." The girl seemed unable to say anything else. Merlock silenced her by putting a finger on her lips.
"Sh...." This stopped the girl from talking, but it made her tremble violently. For a moment she just stared at Merlock with wide, round eyes.
"Now..." Merlock started to say, but the girl burst in suddenly.
Covering her face with her hands, letting her eyes peep out through her fingers, words sprung forth from her mouth like a river. "I'mverysorryI'mhorriblyshywouldyoupleasecometomyhousetonighttheaddressinonthispaper" she pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket. "DrFairchildsaystheonlywaytogetovermyshynessistoconfrontmyfearsohereIampleasesayyesohpleaseohpleaseohpl-"
That was when Bindi whacked her. "Be quiet! Merlock can't hear himself think!"
"Bindi!" Merlock admonished her.
"Sor-ry." Bindi said, insincerely.
The girl was taken aback by Bindi's actions. Her eyes got wide and watery, tears threatening to spill at any moment.
Merlock took that moment to ask an important question. "Tell me, what is your name."
"A...Ami Bestbrind." Ami replied, looking at the ground.
"I'd be delighted to come to your house tonight," Merlock said, reassuringly. Bindi didn't look too thrilled.
"Oh, thank you!" Ami shouted, then ran off into the forest.
"You're not really going, are you?!" Bindi asked when Ami was gone.
"Of course we are." Merlock replied.
"WE?"
