We used to rule the school, we did. Moony, Padfoot, Wormtail and Prongs; the Marauders. Unseparatable, fiercely loyal, closely knit brotherhood. We never thought it would end. Why should we? At school we were invincible, caught up in our own personal Neverland. No one expected us to change, to grow up and mature.
James was the first change. To the rest of the school, it seemed as though he instantly decided to be different just for her. Sirius was actually the true cause of that. I can remember the day perfectly. Padfoot was asking James why he even bothered anymore. His theory was 'It's 6th year, only two more terms at Hogwarts, why should you still be caught up on the girl who wasn't worth it.' That was the only time I've ever seen James actually mad at Sirius. He punched him, hard, and told him he knew nothing about who was worth something. After Lily said yes, I heard James thank him for it. Just like that, we were back to normal. Brothers always.
Sirius's was even more unexpected. His parents were always a big issue with him. But when he found out his little brother, young Regulus had become a Death Eater. That was when the change began. He started to see the war that was unfolding on the horizon. He became even more determined to be good, to be on the light side.
Peter, oh little Peter. Who was James and Sirius's lapdog, the fan club. We excepted him, maybe not as fully as we did each other, but he was loved.
It's because of this mousy boy that I lost my family. Lily and James will never be able to meet their son, or his friends. They'll never be able to see the haunted look on Sirius's face after his years in Azkaban. They'll never know how much it scares me to see that, he was the one who would always be carefree. Who would grow up the reckless, funny godfather. Not this broken man with shadows of his past and the guilt ridden thoughts.
Now, on this Halloween night, 14 years after their deaths, I reflect back on the happy day of school. Back on the days without worry, without terror, without loneliness. I think back now of when I was invincible, when I was loved and cared about. But of course I was, back then I wasn't a jobless werewolf. No then, I was a king. That was when I ruled the world.
The song is Viva La Vida by Coldplay. 'Paring' is the Marauders, Remus Lupin's point of view. Reviews are welcome and if you have any ideas/requests just drop me a line with the song title/quote/situation and the people involved and I'll make it happen. Thanks for reading!
