I never looked back. I didn't want to. I wanted to keep the past in the past. I didn't want to relive it over and over again. My life has always been a nightmare. I wanted to change that for once.
I haven't seen anyone from S.H.I.E.L.D. I haven't seen anyone from HYDRA either, thankfully.
It's been about a year since I have talked to anyone from New York. I have been able to make a new life for myself in that one year in Los Angeles. I have been providing my services as a bodyguard along with a few people I have learned to trust. They call me their partner. I never had a partner in my life before. It was good to finally have someone who would have my back no matter what.
I kept the name Talia. It's the only thing that reminds me of the girl I was before I became...this. My partner, Christian, shortened the name to Lia. He claimed that Talia was too long for him to say.
"Yo Lia, you done yet. Why do girls take so long dressing up? Is it really that hard?" Chris called from downstairs. We have been roommates ever since I found my way here. He is the one who introduced me to the job.
"Says the boy who takes an hour to comb his hair," I countered from upstairs.
"Hey, it takes time to get this hair to stay this perfect."
I snorted. If I had short hair like him, I could probably do the same hair in two minutes. All he needs to do is put hair gel and then form it into his desired position. But does he do that? No. He has to first comb his hair for half an hour. Then, he puts hair gel on. He puts five coats of it before he is satisfied. Then he styles his hair perfectly for twenty minutes.
After few minutes, I made my way down the stairs. We were running another security detail for a guy from Russia. Our boss said that we'd be running it with a group of people from another agency. We weren't given any other details for our "protection". Yeah, right.
Chris was wearing his standard security uniform just like me. A suit. At times like this, I miss my Hydra uniform. At least it was more badass than an orthodox suit. Plus, in my opinion, it was way more comfortable.
"So Lia, you finally decided to join the party?" he asked.
"Shut up Lance! It's not like you can clean up better than me."
"Touché."
Chris and I made our way to our car.
"Lia, you got any idea on who we're guarding?" Chris asked me for the fiftieth time this week.
"Bro, I got the same Intel as you. I don't know any more than you," I responded.
"You sure?"
"Positive," I responded. For some reason Chris thinks that I have some way of getting more Intel if I really wanted it. Then again, I can. I still have my contacts.
Chris drive us to our office. We first have to sing in before we can start any of our assignments. Our protocols are pretty stupid if you ask me.
Just as we were about to exit the building and report to hotel in which we were supposed to pick our Russian dude up at, our boss called for us to stop.
"Christian. Talia. Wait. Okay, I believe you have been briefed on the involvement of another agency. That agency will be S.H.I.E.L.D. I believe you kids have heard of them. Just get along with them. I do not want to get on the bad side of their director. He is one powerful man." With that he was walked away.
Well, that was one pleasant conversation, I thought.
Chris led me back to our car. S.H.I.E.L.D. I haven't even talked to these guys for a year. Then again, what were the odds that the same exact people who sent Ward and me on that mission were the ones running the security detail with us. Not very high if you think about it.
"So you know anything about these S.H.I.E.L.D. folks?" Chris asked.
"No, why?"
"You have been staring out the window the whole ride so far. You hate staring out the window. Hell, not even the radio is on. It's way too quiet. So spill."
"Long story."
"We've got time."
"Uhh...actually no we don't. The hotel is just around the corner. Sorry Lance, but story time is going to have to wait," I smirked.
"Damn you Lia. Damn you." Chris shook his head and smiled.
Chris parked the car in the back of the hotel. As we got out we were met with six people staring at us. I immediately recognized three of them. My face drained of color. Just my luck. I'm met with the idiots who want all my freaking Intel on freaking HYDRA. I froze up. What if they were here to take me back and lock me up with Ward again?
"Agent Christian Lance and this is my partner Agent Talia Rivkin. We are here to serve as a protection detail. May I ask who you are," Chris asked with much more formality than I could ever manage.
"Well, Agent Lance, I believe your partner here can answer that for you," Agent Coulson answered staring at me.
Chris turned to look at me with a confused look. "Lia?"
**An Angel with a Shotgun**
I looked at Chris panicked. Everything I worked so hard to keep a secret was unravelling right in front of my eyes.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents stared at me with hatred. I fled right after I completed their mission. They had every right to hate me. Even if I have defected from HYDRA.
The way Chris looked at me was the worst. His eyes were filled with doubt and betrayal. I should have told him about these guys when I had the chance. This guy helped me find a job in this huge city and he was the only one who was actually willing to help the new girl. And here I am watching the truth unfold right in front of me. About to destroy everything I worked so hard to build.
"Chris..." I began. I was lost. I didn't know what to say. Just as I opened my mouth again, a man appeared behind the group an answered for me.
"Agent Rivkin has helped us in a mission before but fled before we could debrief her. It's one of the few reasons why my fellow agents have a sour relationship with her," the man answered. As he walked into the light, I recognized him. It was Ward. "Hey, how are you?" he asked me.
"Better than before," I answered with a small smile. If anyone could understand what I was going through, it was Ward.
"Good."
"You two know each other?" Chris asked looking between the two of us.
"Yeah. Chris, meet Ward. Ward, Chris." It was weird. Both, Chris and Ward were sizing each other up.
"Okay, are we going to do our job or continue these extremely intriguing conversation?" I asked sarcastically.
"That's a good idea," Chris stated.
"Ya think?" I asked.
