A/N: As a Dinah fan when League things happen I always try to think of ways to explain her absence if the show doesn't. And during "Absolute Justice" I always imagined she was off protecting members of the JSA. I think it's clear that the show was hinting at there being another Canary (an original Canary). In the comics the original Canary is Dinah's mother so I went with that, and decided to write a little drabble about where Dinah was during "Absolute Justice".

Targeted

Dinah stared at her cell phone guiltily as it rang for what felt like the hundredth time.

"Dinah, answer your phone."

Dinah huffed and glared at her mother. "Mom, don't worry about it."

"Your phone has been ringing all day, Dinah Laurel," Her mother scolded. "They obviously need your help. Answer the phone."

"Mother, there is an ice controlling psycho out there wanting to assassinate the JSA. I'm not leaving your side," Dinah promised.

"Ted's here, Dinah. I'll be fine."

Dinah laughed darkly. "Ted's a target too, mom. The fact that he's here makes me want to stay even more."

Ted laughed as he entered the kitchen. "Yep, she's your daughter, Di. Stubborn as the day is long."

"The two of you are my family. I'm not leaving you here without back up. I don't care who else needs me," Dinah told them with a sigh.

"We've been at this for a long time, kiddo, we know the risks," Ted said with a warm smile.

"No offense, but you're both a tad out of practice. I'm staying right here until Courtney calls with the all clear," Dinah promised.

"Was I this stubborn?" Her mother asked Ted.

"No, you were worse. You were determined to do everything on your own. At least she has help sometimes," Ted smirked.

"Yes, some help," The older Dinah scoffed. "Oliver Queen."

Dinah grinned at her mother. "Oliver's not so bad, mom. He's a bit of a play boy and he comes with a lot of baggage, but who doesn't?"

Ted quirked an eyebrow at her. "Not so bad, huh? Do you like this boy?"

Dinah sighed. "Uncle Ted, I'm not twelve years old anymore. It's not as simple as like these days."

Ted huffed. "I think I need to meet this Oliver Queen sometime soon."

"No, Dinah wouldn't go for someone like that. She knows better. Don't you, Dinah?"

Dinah cleared her throat and studied her hands. "Sure, I know better. I hope."

Dinah's phone rang again and this time it was Courtney. Dinah answered quickly. "What's the word? Good. We'll meet you at the Brownstone in a few hours. See you then."

"What happened?"

"We've got the all clear. I told them I'd bring the two of you to the Brownstone. Carter says he has some bad news," Dinah said worriedly.

The original Black Canary sighed. "He seems to be full of bad news lately."

"It's not him, Di. It's the world. It's headed toward a dark place. The bad news just comes with it," Ted said sadly.

"And that's why the world has us. To add a little light," Dinah told the two veteran heroes with a small sad smile. "They need us whether they realize it or not."
