WARNING: This story will contain yuri coupling (albeit temporary, it'll be there). It might also include explicit scenes (emphasis on MIGHT, I'm not too confident in my lemon-writing just yet) eventually.

Despite my hopes, I don't own Death Note or any of its characters. The evil, evil things I would do to Light…

Yamada Mai was not having a good day. Honestly, she knew that all good things had to come to an end sometime. She had been getting by much too effortlessly to not expect something like this.

But standing here, in front of Yagami Raito, the number one student in the fucking country, much less the university, she knew she was effectively screwed for the rest of her life.

Friday, May 25th 2007

Her mother had called her early that week, as per their agreement. Mai was up and moving by the time her phone began vibrating, contrary to everything her mother assumed about her.

"Hai," she responded tonelessly, her eyes moving back and forth from the manga she was reading.

"Morning Mai!" her mother greeted cheerfully. "How are you?"

"I'm alright mom," she responded. "What about you?"

"Fine, fine. How are your classes going? Getting straight A's I hope?"

Mai's oddly colored eyes rolled upwards in exasperation at this point. Yamada Natsuki was an overbearing mother to the T, and nothing satisfied her more than a successful child, no matter how "unhappy" said child was.

Case and point to Yamada Takeshi, oldest child of Yamada Natsuki and Yamada Shin. He was currently living a successful (read: unhappy) life as a doctor in England. Inwardly, she snorted. For a long time, she had believed the same thing her mother had – that material things were the only path to happiness. But she had lived a sheltered life for a long time before she opened her eyes to the utter wrongness of her point of view.

Sure, money was always nice to have, but becoming a world renowned doctor was not the only way to become successful. You didn't have to be the richest to be the happiest. Case and point to Yamada Kimiko, who was currently touring the world (read: looking for gigs in Los Angeles), youngest child of the Yamada family, who rebelled her mother from the second she had been born.

"Yes, mother. You know I always have straight A's." This was true, but her mother didn't exactly know which subjects she was taking, did she?

"Hm, yes, but it's always nice to hear it again, isn't it? Soon enough, you'll be a world class lawyer! Every firm will be hankering to have you, and one day you'll make your own!"

She could almost hear the sparling stars in her mother's eyes. Mai sighed quietly and pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Anyway, before I get distracted and forget to tell you, I'll be visiting you on campus soon," Natsuki continued cheerfully.

Mai's eyes snapped open. "What?" she hissed, her heart beginning to increase its pace.

"Oh, I knew you'd be delighted! To-Oh is such a beautiful place, and I figured a little break from all the hard work I've been doing here would be nice! So why not pay a visit to my darling daughter while I take in the sights of such a prestigious university?"

The ravenette struggled to keep her anger and panic out of her voice. "Mother," she started slowly, thinking strategically, "To-Oh is not a tourist destination. You can't come here just to "take in the sights" and expect security guards to let you into buildings."

"Well, that's what you're here for! You'll be my tour guide!"

Despite her control, her fist clenched and her teeth grit angrily. "Of course, why didn't I think of that?"

Dissuading her mother would never work. She needed a new plan. "When will you be coming?" she asked. She needed time – lots of it.

"Hm? I'm not sure actually – maybe after auditing is over? It's such a hassle," Natsuki whined, "Why do I have to deal with the jerks? Just because I'm head accountant doesn't mean –"

She had heard this rant before. Once every year, actually. It was slowly driving her mad, she was sure of it. "Mother," she interrupted calmly, "give me a date. I'll have to make sure I'm free."

"Right! Um –" she heard shuffling of papers. "I think I can fly out in two weeks! Is that okay?"

To fake papers and bribe (read: blackmail) professors? There was never enough time. But was better than she had originally hoped for, and she would take what she got. Giving her mother an affirmative answer, she began to say her goodbyes.

It was then that Yamada Natsuki decided to throw her oldest daughter another curveball.

"Oh! I also expect you to introduce me to that Yagami boy you've been hanging out with! I looked him up, what a looker! I want to personally give him my blessing to date you. You'll be such a great couple!"

Mai was certain she was going into cardiac arrest. Her phone slipped out of her sweaty palms, blinking to show that the phone call had ended. She paid it no mind as it dropped into her lap. She was so fucked.

I'll have a set schedule for updating, which should be every Sunday, so keep a look out! It keeps me honest and keeps you guys waiting, but not for too long :P
