Chapter 1

The door slams behind me and I blow out an exhausted breath, kicking off my shoes as I flop down onto the sofa.

My 6 hour shift at work turned into a 14 hour nightmare when Mr. Clayton announced he was late doing inventory. A bubble bath, greasy food and a good book have my name written all over them.

"There you are!" Kate trills, skipping down the hallway wearing her bathrobe; her hair in rollers with green gunk all over her face. "We're going out."

"NOOOOOO!" I curl into a ball and hide my head behind a pillow. This is NOT what I want right now.

"YES! Come on, Steele. It's Friday night." Kate snatches my protection but doesn't manage to steal it from me and yanks on my arm instead.

"I've been working all day," I whine.

"So going to a club will relax you. Pleeeeaaaase?"

I turn further into the pillow and groan, my ass almost hitting her nose in response. A semi-naked, ridiculously handsome masseur reciting Pride & Prejudice from memory, now that would relax me.

"You're 22 years old. Stop behaving like an old fuddy." I'm not even looking at her and I know she has her arms folded over her chest while she taps her pink, fluffy, could-be-mistaken-for-a-dead-cat slippered foot.

"I'm misunderstood is all," I sniff

"I ran you a bubble bath," Kate sings. "And we're meeting José anyhow. We can grab a bite to eat before we go to the club."

"Why do we have to go out tonight? Let's do it Tuesday," I mumble. This couch is far too comfortable. My body sags and my eyes welcome sleep as the tension in my muscles from lifting box after box finally dissipates.

"Because it's our last weekend in Portland. The last time we're ever going to leave this house hooting for cheap beer and tequila before we wake up with take out for breakfast, swearing by almighty Vogue never to do it again while we watch old movies sharing your mom's blanket. Please, Ana?" Kate murmurs sadly.

Not the guilt trip!

We've just graduated from WSU Vancouver and are moving to Seattle next week. Kate has a job as a hot-shot journalist while I'm happy to stay in our new apartment baking cookies and watching Hallmark re-runs after today's torturous exertions. Interviews, schminerviews!

I huff dramatically and peek up from my pillow fort to see Kate smiling sweetly, her Kermit-colored face pleading with me to say yes.

"Did you light candles?"

Kate nods her head slowly, her smile turning into a smirk.

"Extra bubbles?"

She nods again, her smirk turning into a sparkly Katherine Kavanagh grin. She knows she's got me over a barrel.

Slowly, languorously, I unravel myself from the couch, cursing myself for being so weak.

Kate jumps up and down on the spot, clapping her hands with glee. She ushers me towards the bathroom as I pull a hair tie from my wrist and wrap my hair into a messy bun.

"I've left you something to wear on your bed. I'll bring you a glass of wine once you're in the tub. Hurry up or we will be late!"

I roll my eyes as she bounces over to the kitchen.

"It better be a big one."
