Constantly
The night they pulled her out of the river, his heart was in his throat the entire time. He hadn't told her how he felt, hadn't had the courage to tell her. They had arrived on scene and it took all of his control not to scoop her up in his arms and hold her close. He berated himself for not telling her how he felt about her. Hadn't he gone through that before when she'd been shot? Three years of loving her, and he still couldn't tell her that she held his heart in her hands.
He ordered his detectives to continue the investigation and stopped the EMTs before they loaded her into the ambulance. She stared at him, warmth radiating out from her gaze. She tried to tell him something about the case, but couldn't remember what she needed to tell him. He reached out and brushed her cheek. She stopped mid-sentence, and he told her not to worry, they would take care of it. She nodded, her trust in him complete.
As they loaded her into the ambulance, he wondered if she knew how he felt about her. The two of them had always been close. He also wondered briefly if she only saw him as a father figure. She reached out to him, a silent plea to go with her to the hospital. He obliged her wish and rode next to her, hand in hand.
Later that night, towards the early morning, he lay in bed, wide-awake. His thoughts returned to her, sleeping peacefully in the hospital, safe from another danger, her father by her side. He wondered again if she knew, she was always on his mind. In the still hours of the night, like then, she drove him just a little crazy, and in his heart of hearts, he secretly hoped that she was in love with him as well.
Would you look at her?
She looks at me
She's got me thinking about her constantly
But she don't know how I feel
And as she carries on without a doubt
I wonder if she's figured out
I'm crazy for this girl.
Her dad was asleep in the chair. She glanced over at him; secretly wishing another man was sitting there. She stared at the ceiling thinking about him. He was always on her mind. She slowly drifted into sleep and began to dream of him, of then together. She saw herself in his car, riding with the windows rolled down. The wind teased her hair, throwing it into her eyes. He was driving, glancing at her occasionally, but listening to her talk over the sound of the other cars. She wasn't sure what she was saying, but whatever it was, he smiled brilliantly at her, one of his rare smiles that crinkled around his eyes and made her heart jump in her chest. As the dream faded, she felt herself waking and hoping he would be there to hold her, to keep her safe, but only saw a darkened room.
The morning light was just barely kissing the sky when he finally gave up on sleep and decided to stop by the hospital before work. When he reached her room, she was awake. Her father was asleep in the chair by the bed. His sudden appearance back in her life explained so much. He sat on the edge of her bed.
"Hi." She said softly.
"Hi." He answered. They stared at each other until he looked away. They were face to face and all his fears and self doubts clamored in his head. Then she reached out to him.
"John." He looked up at her, looked into her eyes and saw all the things he felt in his heart, but hadn't been able to say.
"Lilly." He breathed softly. Her heart leapt into her throat at seeing his love in his eyes and on his face.
"I love you." They whispered in unison.
Right now
Face to face
All my fears
Pushed aside
And right now
I'm ready to spend the rest of my life
With you.
Would you look at her?
She looks at me
She's got me thinking about her constantly
But she don't know how I feel
And she carries on without a doubt
I wonder if she's figured out
I'm crazy for this girl.
