Having To Say Yes

He knows he should try and develop some sort of immunity to that look on her face, that expression with the big, pleading, beautiful eyes. They remind him so much of when she was a kid and he'd have done anything on Earth for her, to keep her safe, to try and find them safety. Not much has changed in that respect over the years, but she's changed. She grew up . . .She's still beautiful, she can still talk him into just about anything and she still knows it.

Then he sees those flashes of vulnerability in her eyes, those moments when she believes this is for now only and the future won't let them be together. It's when he remembers those times that he really can't refuse her anything. He wants to give her the world, he wants to make everything right and he can't.

He can't do anything to really bring her happiness, because no matter how hard he tries, no matter how much he fights and struggles and . . . Division – Division have taken everything from them, every last hope if they allow it.

That's why he says yes, despite all the reasons he should say no. She appears in the doorway with the box, the tiny, hungry mews inside and he knows that any protest is futile. He doesn't know the first thing about caring for kittens, doesn't know how he's going to afford to feed them when most of the time he struggles to put food on the table for the two of them.

"I found them, can we keep them?"

"Yes." The world shifts as she smiles. "Yes, we can." He knows he did the right thing. Nothing else matters because she's smiling. He did the right thing, he wishes it was always this easy and refuses to think about all the ways in which this could go bad.
