Chapter one:
Why. Why is he in this position? Hadn't he been through enough? Hadn't he been set free? Proven innocent? Light looked from L to the handcuff being closed around his wrist. So why was he allowing this to happen? Why was L so stubborn that he would rather keep him in chains than admit he was wrong? What else could he possibly do to further prove his innocence to a man who refused to believe what was right in front of his eyes? Light blinked back angry tears. He didn't know how much more of this he could take. He had been locked up for months and then his father had tried to kill him, even if it had all been an act, it was so real, so terrifying. How could a father do something like that to his own son? One of the tears he had been holding back slipped out and ran down his cheek, disappearing into his filthy shirt.
"Hmmhm." Light looked up at the sound of the quiet chuckle. L was looking at him with a look of interest and an amused smile was playing at his lips. "Kira showing weakness, that's so… human." L shook his head in mock disappointment. Light was so sick of being accused of being the most horrible man on the planet. He was allowed a moment of weakness he was human after all. Steeling himself he looked L directly in the eyes, unflinching he spoke for the first time since the whole ordeal with his father and the gun.
"I would like to take a shower. And a change of clothes. Please." He maintained unwavering eye contact with L waiting for his response.
"Ah yes this way. I'll show you to our room." He turned and started walking, pulling Light along behind him. They went up a flight of stairs and entered the elevator at the end of the hall. Their room was the only one on the penthouse floor. L stopped in the middle of the room. It was a large room with a big king sized bed on one wall and a huge walk in closet on the wall across from it. All of Lights clothes had been brought from his room and he could see several new sets mixed in. on the way to the bathroom, light grabbed a light blue button up shirt, a pair of his boxers, dark form fitting jeans and his socks and shoes. You had to go through the closet to get to the huge master bathroom. There was a large shower with fogged sliding glass doors and a large bathtub. Light grabbed a plump, fluffy white towel from a stack on a shelf near the bathroom door. L handed him a razor, shaving cream and his tooth brush and tooth paste. Light set everything down on the end of a long bench by the shower. He started pulling off his clothes. He did not care if L was watching him. He was tired of being dirty. His clothes were the same ones he had on the day he had asked to be locked up. They were stiff with months of dirt and sweat. L took the handcuff off long enough for Light to get his shirt off and then it was back on. He didn't bother throwing his clothes in the laundry basket. He tossed them directly into the trash. He climbed in to the shower leaving enough room for the 12 foot handcuff chain to slide around comfortably.
After taking a long hot shower, Light wrapped the towel around his waist and got out. He walked over to the mirror and began to shave his face. He liked being clean shaven. After shaving he brushed his teeth. It took three times to get rid of the sweater feeling. He found some scissors in one of the drawers and gave himself a much needed hair cut. Finally finished he dressed quickly. Once again the handcuff was removed only long enough for Light to put on his shirt. Then L leading the way, they headed back down stairs to join the rest of the investigation team, who were without a doubt waiting for them. Through the whole ordeal not one word had been spoken between the two of them but upon entering the elevator, L spoke up.
"I expect you would like some food as well. I had Watari bring us up some supper. We will eat and then we will meet with the others and begin work." Light nodded in acknowledgement he couldn't make his moth move right now. He was so tired all he really wanted to do was sleep but he wasn't going to say anything that might cause L to start accusing him of being Kira again. When they reached the 5th floor they exited the elevator and made their way toward the kitchen and dining area. There were plates of sandwiches and trays of cookies and assorted tarts. There was a pot of tea and sugar and cream. It was a nice spread. L and Light sat across from each other. Light grabbed a couple of sandwiches and blackberry tart. After pouring himself and L a cup of tea he began to eat. It tasted delicious but Light hadn't eaten more than a few bites at a time while he was locked up and he couldn't bring himself to eat more than a sandwich and a bite of his tart.
When L was finished the left their plates and headed down to the third floor where the work space was. The whole floor was full of computers and file cabinets. When they enter the room everyone from the task force was there including chief Yagami, Lights father and the chief of police. Light couldn't bring himself to look at his father. It was still to painful. Just the idea of looking at him awoke the slumbering snake of anger that had been residing in the pit of his stomach. He kept his head down as he followed L to the computers. They started working right away. L kept giving orders to the task members, but ultimately he left Light alone except to occasionally ask what had found so far.
He was so focused on trying to find anything that would lead them to Kira that he hadn't even noticed when the task force had gone home. But it was becoming increasingly harder and harder to concentrate. He had been reading the same line of text on the screen for hours now and he still, if asked, could not tell you what it said. His eyes kept closing on their own and before he knew it he was asleep at his desk, head on his arm.
L had only been half focused on the tasks in front of him. He had been watching Light all night and turned his full attention to light when his body finally gave out and Lights head hit his arm. As he watched Light sleep he began to think over the events of the night. It had been a very interesting one staring with Lights small slip of weakness. L had yet to decide if the tear was real or a very convincing act. Either way it was both surprising and intriguing. Kira or the Light he knew, neither of them would have slipped like that. Their pride would have forbidden it. It was also a possibility that the events prior might have been enough to break him, considering the kid wouldn't even acknowledge his father's presence, but if that were the case wouldn't light have broken down completely? And then there was his reaction to L's taunt. L had expected some sort of angry outburst, but instead Light seemed to have sort of hardened at his words. Almost like he was refusing to let L see how much they affected him. Now here the kid was asleep at his desk. It was close to midnight and L had been sure he would have dropped of long before now. He could tell that all Light had really wanted to do was go to bed.
It was all so… odd, yet so fascinating. Then again that was this whole case. L had been forced to question everything he thought he had known about the world; Forced to accept the impossible and the irrational, the illogical even. His world had been turned upside down and this kid, Light Yagami, was at the center of it. He had been nearly 100% certain that Light was Kira and then he changed. Now he wasn't so sure. Sure the kid was still Light and yet he wasn't. Something had changed in that cell. It was all so… strange. L decided that he would have to study Light more to understand more. He looked back over to Light and decided to show a little compassion. He got up and walked over to him. He shook his shoulder gently. Light woke up enough to be lead to their room by L.
Having settled light into bed he grabbed his laptop from inside the nightstand drawer. He wasn't in a sleeping mood. He was about halfway through a report was reading when light gave a sharp lurch next to him and then flung himself out of bed with a sharp terror filled scream. L was so startled that he climbed across the bed to light. Light was making the awful chocking gasping sounds, that L realized were sobs, and was visibly shaking. L didn't know what to do, but he could tell that the kid wasn't really awake all the way, so he crouched down and patted Light on the back until he fell back into a deep sleep, Light probably wasn't going to remember this in the morning. L picked him up and put him back in bed. He climbed back into his own side and picked his laptop up off the floor where it had landed when he had jumped. This was another thing to add the growing list of odd things about light. He turned back to the screen and continued working while still contemplating light in the back of his mind. It was a very long night and Light sleep the rest of it in peace under the watchful eye of L.
