A/N: This is my second story, based off the robbery scene in the episode Matsya Nyaya. This story does not contain any major spoilers for the episode, however I would suggest watching it because it was a great episode and it will help you understand the scene. I do not own Person of Interest. If I did, I would not be writing fanfiction.
Fear.
It was an emotion Harold Finch had not been prepared for. Yet the man with all the knowledge at his fingertips could not bring himself to look up the video feeds from the hospital he knew John had been taken to.
A loud explosion cut Harold off mid-sentence as he jumped, unprepared for the sudden loud noise. Harold did not understand; he thought they were in the clear after the last stop.
"Mr. Reese?"
No response came, and the only sound was of gunshots. Perhaps John could not hear him. Harold remembered the explosion that had killed Matt Dugan. He sighed, remembering that he had been too slow to warn Matt. Harold shook it off; this was no time to think about the past.
"Stay here."
John's voice surprised him almost as much as the explosion did. At least that meant John was alive, even if he could not hear Harold. Harold began searching traffic cameras for any information on what had happened. More gunshots, and then silence.
"Mr. Reese?"
There was no response, and Reese's phone was not moving. What happened?
"Mr. Reese?"
Harold was starting to panic. He returned to his computer and pulled up the feeds from one of the traffic cameras the truck had passed. He gasped as the force of the explosion knocked the truck on its side.
"Mr. Reese!" Harold said, almost to himself, in a hushed whisper. From there, he tried to switch cameras to get a better view, but the only cameras he could find showed a different view of the truck until finally, half in a panic, Harold saw John kick open the back doors to the truck and shoot two masked men. Harold was about to breathe a sigh of relief when John suddenly collapsed.
And now Harold Finch sat behind his computers, feeling more helpless than before. He had watched when the emergency responders arrived, as John and the driver were loaded into an ambulance. He watched the ambulance, not through video feeds, but by tracking the GPS in John's phone until it came to rest at the hospital.
It had not moved since.
Still unable to bring himself to pull up the feeds, Harold considered his options. He could go down to the hospital. Harold quickly dismissed the idea. Not because of being in public. Harold knew how to hide in plain sight. Not because he did not like hospitals. Even after his accident, after the time he spent in the hated place, the hospital was not what he was afraid of. It was what he might find in the hospital that had Harold Finch so afraid.
In the end, he decided to call Carter. She might have a sarcastic remark about John having been hurt (again), but she would drop everything to check. He knew why John liked her so much, she was a good person.
After getting off the phone with her, he decided to continue research on the number, and why he had chosen to shoot his fellow guard and driver before taking off. He could not watch as Carter moved closer to the hospital, and as much as he wanted an answer, he was still afraid.
Before long he looked up, seeing that Carter had arrived, but still hesitating before finally calling. She picked up after only one ring, and confirmed that she had found John.
"Oh, thank God!"
