The rain latched against the windows, a cold autumn night setting. Inside, a red head got out of bed and wandered downstairs to the common room, when she reached the stairs she could see another figure who was sitting on the couch, looking intently at the fire. When she approached the figure, she noticed it was James Potter, with a mop of messy hair on his head, and he seemed to be thinking. She carefully walked over, and muttered a "Hello, James"

Even though she said it very quietly, he heard her and swivelled his head to look at Lily, she was standing there looking dishevelled like she needed sleep

"You called me James" he said, he knew it was stupid, it was the first thought that came to mind

"Yeah well I'm tired..." she said

"You only call me James when you're in a good mood. Come, sit" he gestured to a spot next to him, she walked over and plopped herself next to him. Truth is when James got the head boy badge they were forced to act more civil to each other, and what turned into a bit of a friendship.

"Can't sleep. You?" James asked, trying to make conversation

"Same, that stupid rain."

"Want to do something?"

"I'm too tired." Lily said "As long as I don't have to move too much."

"I have something in mind" He said

"I'm listening" Lily said, her eyes closed, her head bent back

"I'm afraid it will involve you opening your eyes. I suggest a staring contest."

"Just because I'm bored" Lily said, opening her emerald eyes

James propped himself up and sat across from Lily

"On the count of three" He said

"No blinking" Lily said

"One"

"No moving"

"Two"

"Three" Lily finished

James and Lily stared at each other, looking both into each others eyes. Lily's were a deep emerald green, beautiful and that showed her emotion, no matter how much she tried to conceal them. Lily noticed James's were a hazel, a colour she rather liked. They sat staring at each other for a while, not wanting to break eye contact and lose.

"I really want to blink right now" Lily said

"Can't stand not looking at me even for a second"

"I would roll my eyes but I can't stand to lose"

"That's right you can't move from this spot"

"All it takes is for you to blink"

"Why do you think I would blink?"

"I dunno. Maybe we have already blinked but we just don't know because we have at the same time" Lily said

"Quite thoughtful. Blink and you're dead"

They sat staring at each other for a while in a deep gaze, until James spoke up

"How long have we been at this for?"

"Roughly two minutes" She said, her eyes were still on James's

The sat staring at each other for another minutes, until James broke the contact and kissed her. Lily stiffened but then relaxed, putting her hands up into his hair and trailing through it as they kissed, and he brought his hands to her back, pulling her closer. Immense joy filled him as their lips moved against each other, until they both pulled away, her forehead resting against his, a grin on both their faces.

"D'you want to go to Hogsmead with me?" James asked

"I think the real question is who won"
