This is the first of a series of fanfics I plan to do where I get the quote of the day off of a list and then write whatever it makes me think of. I hope this turns out as good as I want it to.
Couple(s): Sweden/Finland
Quote: "Him that I love, I wish to be free - even from me." By Anne Morrow Lindbergh
---
Sweden sat at home alone, waiting for his housemate to return.
Finland had gone to visit Estonia for one of their strange festivals a couple of days ago and was due back any time now. The small young man had been excited for days in a way the taller blonde only seemed to see when his 'wife' spoke of these celebrations he went to. It was as if they were the best times in his life with the way he went on and on for days about how great everything was going to be.
It really made Berwald wonder exactly why he seemed to enjoy himself so much, honestly. Was it the party, like he claimed, or was it the company?
It was true that Eduard was Tino's best friend but did that mean that he liked spending time with him more than he liked to be at home?
It really hurt to think about it but he wondered if it was true.
Finland never seemed to get excited in the same way about doing things with him, not even when they celebrated the holidays they had in common. The only thing that seemed to make him as happy as the times he shared with Estonia was Christmas and that was something that much of the world took part in. It did not count as something that he shared with his partner, in his opinion.
He was not really jealous of the other bespectacled nation, he decided. He just wanted to be able to make his 'wife' smile like that. It seemed like it was his place to bring that kind of joy to him, not some friend that he hardly saw.
He sighed.
Maybe he was just not good enough for Finland...
Soon, another panicked thought came to his worried mind: What if he wanted to leave him for Estonia? What if all of this time, he had been spending these holidays with him because they were secretly seeing each other? Would he do that to him? Surely he was not that cruel...
But maybe that was what Tino deserved. Maybe it would hurt but Berwald wanted his 'wife' to be happy and to feel free to do what he wanted to do, even if what he wanted was to be with another man. He just loved him enough to think of him first...
The front door opened and in came the young man in question.
"Su-san," Finland greeted with a smile. "You waited up for me."
"Course," Sweden replied, his eyes still sad from what had been going on in his head. "H've f'n?"
"Oh! Yes, it was great," he responded happily, hanging his coat up. "We danced, sang, and laughed the entire weekend! Estonia throws the best festivals."
At the mention of the other man's name, Berwald could not help but darken a little in depression.
"What's wrong?" Tino noticed.
He came over and sat down by his lover.
"J'st... Would y' w'nna be w'th h'm, inst'd of me?" he asked, not looking at him.
The Fin cocked his head to the side. "With Estonia like... like I am with you?"
He blushed deeply at the thought.
Sweden just nodded, not able to even glance at him yet.
"Of course not," Finland said, not even stuttering. "I can't believe you're worried about that! I love Estonia but as my best friend only. It's not the same, Su-san."
"R'lly?" he asked, turning to meet to see his 'wife' now.
"Really. I promise," the violet-eyed nation responded.
He leaned up and kissed him lightly.
"I'm not going anywhere," he added.
