Sam Winchester sat in his assigned seat near the back of the class. It wasn't really a spot he would have picked, he actually liked sitting near the front, but had not say in the matter. Not that he cared – he would only be at this school for a couple more weeks.
Mrs. Geddes, the grade 1 teacher, handed out sheets of paper cut into hearts and crayons before addressing the class. "Alright, it's Mother's Day today. I want you all to write your moms something nice."
Sam felt his stomach sink. He didn't have a mommy.
For a long time, Sam sat and thought about the project before he carefully picked up a green crayon and started writing. He became so involved in his project that he didn't notice Mrs. Geddes coming up behind him and reading his letter.
"Samuel, this is supposed to go to your mom," she told him gently, thinking he didn't understand the letter.
Sam looked up at the teacher, "I don't have a mommy."
Immediately, the teacher's face was full of pity, something Sam had come to really dislike.
Sam frowned and turned back to his project, ignoring the woman.
After class, Sam was walking to the mail box that he always met Dean at when a couple of the boys from his class caught up with him. "Haha, he doesn't have a mommy," one of the boys laughed, being joined quickly by the others.
Sam held his books closer to his chest and turned away, Dean always told him if he was being picked on to just ignore them. The boys, quickly figuring out that they wouldn't receive a reaction, pushed past Sam.
A couple minutes later, Dean arrived and everything was right with the world again.
Dean held out his hand for his younger brother to hold on their walk back to the motel and listened to all about Sam's day.
After a dinner of Spaghetti-o's and a surprise Twinkie, Dean sent Sam to have a bath before bed and cleaned up their dishes. Dean heard a noise behind him and whirled around, on the alert immediately.
There was no reason for alarm, however, as Sam was standing in the doorway, holding a piece of paper. "I made this for you, Dean," Sam whispered and quickly raced to the bathroom, slamming the door.
Dean looked down at the paper, a red heart with green crayon writing:
'Dean, I dont have a mommy but you are beter then one! You make me spagetios and tuk me in. And you chek under the bed for monnsters! I love you Dean! Happy Mother's Day!'
Dean smiled at the paper and sniffled back what was totally not a tear. He walked quietly to the bathroom and knocked on the door. "You almost done in there, Sammy? It's time to check for monsters!"
