"So run, run, run
And hate me, if it feels good.
I can't hear your screams anymore

You lied to me
But I'm older now
And I'm not buying baby

Demanding my response
Don't bother breaking the door down
I found my way out

And you'll never hurt me again."

The Last Song I am Wasting On You-Amy Lee

Fire, warmer and more welcoming than Hestia's hearth. Though I stood hundreds of feet from the fiery waters of the Phlegethon River, I could feel its heat engulfing me, coating my skin in a thick layer of sweat. The flames swayed provocatively, calling to me more than the sirens' song. All it would take would be one touch of the blazing waters to consume me, end all of my pain, and erase my existence.

Slowly, as if in a trance, I edged closer to the shorelines. Waves of heat rolled over me, and the air became thin. My lungs labored for oxygen, making my head spin dizzily. But soon it wouldn't matter; the dead don't need to breathe. When I was close enough to touch the infernos, the heat became unbearable, like my flesh would melt off my body any moment. Yet, I still inched closer to my impending demise.
I could feel my heart thudding in my chest, and the acrid smell of smoke rising from the river filled my nostrils. Though to me, the scent was sweeter than incense. It was my way to end all of my sorrow and suffering.

Before I could contemplate my choices, an angry voice yelled, "Persephone, what do you think you are doing? Don't you dare take another step closer!"

Whirling, I found myself staring at the man who had caused all of my pain. He was silhouetted against the dark black sky, and his silver eyes seemed to glow unnaturally. Two skeletal servants flanked him, brandishing swords, their empty eye sockets staring in my direction. But I paid them no attention. I was too shocked as to how he discovered I was here.
"Hades?" I whispered, horror dripping from my voice. "How did you find me?"

"Don't be ridiculous, Persephone. You're my wife, and you inhabit my realm, so I know where you are at all times!" he yelled. I could hardly process his words over the hissing of the flames and the blood pounding in my ears. A surge of lightheadedness overpowered me, and I swayed, dangerously close to the waters. Through a blur of reds and oranges, I could see Hades' lips moving as he instructed his guards. In an instant, they were at my side, steadying me. I tried to shake them off, but they held fast, their bony fingers digging into my shoulder blades. I was too weak to resist.

"We are going back to our palace, and I am not leaving you unattended. Apparently you cannot be trusted alone." Hades growled.

My hatred for him rippled through me, making my blood boil hotter than the Phlegethon. Hades had taken everything from me. Thinking it was the end of our discussion, Hades turned sharply on his heel, and the guards followed, dragging me with them.

"No!" I snarled, anger flooding me.

He spun around to face me. "No?" he repeated in a hazardously soft voice.

"I know what you did to him, how you cast him into Tartarus just so you could keep us apart!" I screamed my voice trembling with fury and angry tears blurred my vision. Hades' face blanched until it was paler than a corpse. My voice became steadier as I continued, "You've taken everything from me! My life on earth, my innocence, but worst of all you took the one person I loved. When will it be enough?"

"Persephone..."

Hearing him say my voice sent waves of disgust rolling through me. He stared at me grimly, and I tried to avert my gaze, but it was fixated on him. For too long I had stared at his cold gray eyes. In the past, when I had stared into his tempestuous gray eyes I saw my captor and a monster, but at that moment I could only see my reflection mirrored in them. Involuntarily, I shuddered as my world shrunk until it encompassed the rigid contours of his face, making his flinty eyes distinguished. Once, how I had loved those eyes. Now, they were only mirrors of agony trapping me between the invisible walls of pain.

I stood frozen in place, forcing the guards to halt unexpectedly. Roughly, they tugged on my arm, attempting to drag me along. I resisted and jerked away. Surprised, the guards released me. I sprinted towards the river.

What are you doing just standing there?" he thundered. "Catch her!"

I was only a few feet away from the waters. So close from ending all the pain, erasing all the sorrow he had caused me and the man I loved.

My chest constricted from the exertion of running. I felt a skeletal hand tightly encircle my wrist, but my determination gave me strength. Ignoring the death grip, I crept forward, dragging Hades' guard with me.

Strong waves of warmth radiated in waves from the frantically flickering flames. Leaning forward, I passed my hand over the surface of the river. Instantly, my hand blistered, and hissing in pain, I withdrew my burnt arm and cradled it to my chest, noticing how my skin color had changed from a healthy pink to an angry blend of swirling reds and browns.. As my arm began to throb, I wished I had some nectar and ambrosia to heal it. For a second I considered turning back. What if I wasn't brave enough to do this?

Though when I looked back and saw the second guard advancing in my direction, I made my decision. Releasing a hollow breath, I dived into the river. Immediately, fiery arms of flames embraced me, cocooning me in sweltering heat. Two silver moons gleaming coldly with anguish flashed before my vision before I was pulled under in a whirlwind of crimson. A frenzied firestorm of oranges, yellows, and reds danced in front of my eyes before fading to black.

Liquid fire shot through my veins, melting away at my muscles and bones until I felt as my flesh peel off my body. Inside of me, my spirit writhed as my frayed lifeline was singed by the Fates. My mind reeled in panic, but my heart whispered only one thought. Adonis, before I was pulled under the blanket of oblivion.
