Xander was patrolling alone in one Sunnydale's many cemeteries. He couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching him. Well, nothing is jumping out at me, so I guess I should just focus on the Vamp that's in front of me. He fought the Creature, and after staking it, continued his patrol.
Spike followed the boy from a distance. He was far enough to keep Xander from noticing him, but close enough to help if needed. I can't stop from his "friends" from treating him like shit, but I'll be damned if the creatures of the night do the same. Ever since Buffy and Willow started college, they overlooked Xander. And now with Buffy boinking Riley at every opportunity, and Willow discovering her new orientation with Tara, he's become more and more distant. Of course he still attends the Scooby meetings, but everyone conveniently forgets to patrol with him.
Spike knows that Xander, mortal or not, just can't stand by without helping. He started these nightly patrols not long after he returned from his trip. Used to be one of the gang would ask him come along, but those invitations shortly became few and far between. Only Spike is aware of these jaunts, and only since he started rooming with the boy. Bloody Whelp knows that if any of those so called Scoobies found out about the patrols, he would never hear the end of it. So when Xander starts his journey, Spike follows behind and returns before Xander, not letting the boy realize he is being followed. Besides, he's such a demon magnet, I can have a little fun as well. Luckily, Xander has never faced anything besides newly risen Vamps, easy to kill, and Spike gets to admire Xander's pseudo-military training.
On this night, however, Xander is not so lucky. While Spike has been musing, a chaos demon tries to make a meal out of Spike's "Nummy Treat." Where did that come from? Xander tries to fight, but the demon overwhelms him. Time to join the fray. Spike runs, and attacks it, catching the creature offguard. Spike kills the chaos demon, which turns into a pile of goo. Xander, shocked at the unexpected help, makes a move toward Spike and slips into the Demon's remains.
"Why are you here? I thought you were eating me out of cereal."
"What and let you have all the fun? You are the demon magnet of the group. No thanks necessary for saving your hide."
"Thanks, I think⦠Anyway, how did you know where I was, and needed help?" Xander was still confused over the whole situation.
Because I was following you? Spike thought, "Didn't, just larking about for something to kill."
Xander decided he was done patrolling for the night, as shown by the bruises he could feel forming. "I'm calling it a night. One near death experience a night is my limit."
"Ok, lets go. I want to make sure Slutty doesn't stake me if something happens to you."
They walked in silence, Xander pondering Spike's motives and Spike pondering, well just Xander.
