The grounds of the castle were bustling with merchants, villagers, knights and performers. Smoke drifted through the November air from the multiple fires in grates dotted around, constantly being stoked and tended to by the peasants huddled around them for warmth.

Princess Audrey enjoyed the swell of power she would feel when she watched the kingdom from the balcony of her tower. She would make one of her handmaids set her vanity up on the balcony and Audrey would allow the maids to dress her as she watched her people from above.

The cold wind was sharp but the young princess paid it no mind as she stood naked on the balcony as one of the maids pulled a shift over her head. Audrey allowed the young girl to smooth the cotton out as her eyes darted from the fishmonger gutting his produce to the court jester as the girl pulled a corset tight around the princess' waist.

Audrey propped her hands on the stone wall surrounding the balcony, bracing herself as two maids pulled on the corsets lacing until the princess was taking short, shallow and measured breaths.

Audrey ignored the way the maids shivered in the cold wind and she revealed in the way the silk of her dress felt as it was being settled upon her body.

"Fetch my cloak," Audrey ordered, wanting to elevate her status and power over those around her more than anything else. She sat on the stool someone had moved out onto the balcony. The thick material of her cloak was draped over her shoulders and a maid began to brush out Audrey's long hair.

The princess continued to watch the village people as rouge was dusted on her cheeks and Kohl was brushed into her eyebrows and lashes. Finally, her tiara was set on top of her head and silk slippers were slipped on and the ribbons tied around her ankles.

"Your Highness, your mother the Queen has requested your immediate presence in the throne room," a timid maid said and Audrey's jaw tightened. She hated being summoned at the will of her parents and having her servants reminded that she was not yet Queen.

"I want a bath with rose petals when I get back," she demanded as she swept from her balcony and through the castle, her ladies-in-waiting, Jane and Lonnie, following closely behind.

The Princess let herself into the throne room, glancing at the servants around the room with disdain. She forced herself to curtsey to her parents and she saw her ladies-in-waiting do the same out of the corner of her eye.

The two young handmaidens were new to the castle and Audrey had yet to feel as though she could trust them implicitly like the middle-aged woman who had previously been her lady-in-waiting before her untimely death.

"Mother, Father," Audrey began, only for her father, the King, to hold up her hand with a half smile.

"Audrey, my darling, what have you always desired?" he asked and the princess bristled, unsure of her father's motive.

"I cannot think under such pressure Father," she said carefully, discreetly looking around the vicinity.

The King clapped and two knights in gleaming armour stepped out from behind the thrones, clutching a person between them. The Princess gasped as she walked forward to get a better look.

The prisoner had been stripped and was wearing little more than a sack. Her long hair was pale purple, an unusual colour for the region, and it hung in front of her dropped head, masking her features.

"I cannot see the eyes," Audrey announced and another knight came forward, unsheathing his sword and cutting the long curtain of hair in one swift motion. A shower of purple hair dropped lifelessly to the palace floor and the severe, blunt bob allowed the Princess to see the acid green irises of the girl.

She was pale, but Audrey could not deny the beauty in the prisoners' face. She had an angled jaw but a soft nose and full lips, despite the bruising and cut along her lower lip. Unlike Audrey, who needed kohl to define her eyelashes, the prisoners' were long and cast shadows on her naturally pink cheeks.

Audrey and the court were equally terrified and excited by the appearance of the girls' long, slender legs and arms as the sack she had been forced to wear was truly a hessian sack for produce. It was seen as highly impolite and improper to show an ankle or a shoulder so the prisoner's pale limbs were a new, scandalous sight for those gathered in the court.

As she moved, her muscles rippled and she looked as though she was in peak physical shape, evident by the fight she had obviously endured from the minor injuries she sported.

Her hands and feet were bloodied and bound in thick ropes and when the knights dropped her, she fell to her knees hard with no sounds of protest. Audrey couldn't help but register the way Jane's shoulders rose a fraction of an inch and the way Lonnie's face flickered with emotion. The girl refused to blink or look away from the Princess and the sheer brightness of her eyes unnerved Audrey.

"I do not care for her eyes, cover them."

A strip of cloth was tied around the girl's face and her bleeding lips cracked into a grin as if she was wanting to be blinded.

"What is this?" Audrey gestured languidly to the smirking prisoner on her knees in front of her.

"That is the only child of Maleficent, my darling," King Phillip told her daughter but in reality, it was a boast to those gathered in the throne room.

"She is a gift from the kingdom to you," Queen Aurora said monotonously, studying her daughters' reaction closely, waiting to find something that displeased her.

"Is she anything like her mother?" Audrey questioned, looking the prisoner up and down with a sneer.

"She is highly gifted in sorcery and alchemy like her mother," Phillip addressed the court and a smattering of applause went around at the feat of capturing the witch.

"And she belongs solely to the princess, your highness?" Lady Jane asked after Audrey pinched her arm.

Aurora pursed her lips, obviously unsupportive of the idea. Phillip, however, told the court about how he had led his men to victory in the capture of the witch after her mothers' death and how proud he was to be giving her to his daughter.

"She is stronger than her mother if idle tongues are to be believed," Aurora told the room and the prisoner's straight, white teeth were visible and stained with crimson blood as her cracked lips were pulled back into a broad smile.

"What am I to do with her?" Audrey said carefully and her mother's lips pressed into a hard line.

"She is yours to do as you please darling," Phillip replied. "If she does not cooperate we will allow the guards to sort her out," he laughed heartily along with the court.

Audrey felt Jane stiffen beside her as the guard who had cut the prisoner's hair licked his lips possessively.

"Take her to my chambers, my ladies and I will spend the morning with her and if everything is satisfactory, I will have her perform at the luncheon service," Audrey decided finally.

Aurora held up a hand. "Actually, she will be the entertainment for tonight," the Queen overruled her daughter easily and the court clapped and cheered at the thought.

The prisoner simply grinned under her blindfold, holding herself as if she was staring directly into the Princess' eyes.

"Take her," Audrey ordered her ladies and the two rushed forward to grip the prisoner's arms, helping her to her feet.

"Oh, and darling one more thing," the King said as the ladies left the throne room first. "This is your new tailor, she will be residing with your ladies-in-waiting in your tower," the King motioned to a girl in a simple but elegant dress with long blue hair braided into an elaborate look at the nape of her neck.

Audrey barely concealed the sneer at the sight of the beautiful young girl. "Name?"

"Evie, your majesty," the tailor replied, dropping into a perfect curtsey.

"It will do, follow me," was all she said as she swept from the room and through the castle to her tower.
