Minerva stared at the Ravenclaw table from her place at the Gryffindor table. Normally, she minded her own business as most of her friends were within her house.

There was one person that usually sat at Ravenclaw that she enjoyed talking to, though. He was a Muggle-born, a friend. Jason Keller. He was the only Ravenclaw she actively sought out because he interested her and wasn't pompous about his intelligence like other Ravenclaws were.

He taught her about so many things that had to do with the Muggle world that she actually thought she could live comfortably there if she ever had to. He taught her about postcards and televisions. He taught her about cars and planes and phones. And he showed her how much easier a pen and paper was than a quill and parchment.

He showed her there were many varieties of certain things: such as liquid soap versus bar soap, so one never got bored.

And he always made sure to get her these chocolate caramels from the Muggle world on her birthday and other holidays since he knew how much she loved them.

And now he was missing. He left school last year, and there was worry on his face. When she asked him what was wrong, he told her there was war brewing in the Muggle world and his family was scared.

Minerva knew war was bad, but she had no idea how it affected Jason, so she let the matter drop and didn't bother him with any other questions.

When it was time to come back to school for the new year, she had eagerly waited to see him on the train because she could admit, even if it was only to herself, that she had a crush on him.

He didn't show up, though. She tried to send a letter with her owl to him, but Periot didn't seem to know where to go, and if Periot didn't know where to go, Jason wouldn't easily be able to be found.

After weeks of worrying, she finally got up her courage to ask Headmaster Dippet. The headmaster's eyes looked weary. "Miss McGonagall, the Muggle world is in the middle of a war."

"I know, but what does that have to do with Jason?" It was a naive question, Minerva knew, but Jason was a wizard and he belonged in the magical world, not the Muggle world.

"The war has to do with prejudices against many different types of people, but the main target is Jewish people," Headmaster Dippet explained.

Minerva's eyes looked towards the ground. Minerva didn't know about every student's religion, but she did know Jason was Jewish. "Is he okay?" she asked fearfully.

Headmaster Dippet placed a hand on her shoulder. "Jason and his family were forced to go into hiding. Hopefully, they'll be able to stay safe until the tyrant is overthrown."

Minerva looked into her headmaster's eyes. "Have other witches and wizards from the Muggle world gone into hiding?"

He nodded. "It's a reality when faced with a war of such epic proportions that has killed so many people already."

She swallowed. "I don't get why people kill others just for being different."

Headmaster Dippet smiled wanly. "I don't get it either."

Minerva never saw Jason Keller again.
