Barty watched the male nurse. He pretended to be passive, pretended to be asleep in the dark room, but he was just watching the movements of the nurse. Waiting. Biding his time before he could strike.
Rodolphus Lestrange pretended to be the model nurse. He had a warm smile and a presence the screamed, 'Just trust me.' But the warmth never reached his eyes, and Barty knew better than to trust him.
After all, Barty had witnessed Lestrange's less than professional behavior with some of the female patients. Most of the time, he ignored it because it had nothing to do with him. Who cared if Lestrange liked to have some fun with a few of the patients? And he would have kept ignoring it if Lestrange hadn't touched a specific one: Luna Lovegood.
She wasn't like the others. She was there because she thought she had visions and no one believed it, but Barty did. He saw the look in her eyes when she was having a vision. She had a childish innocence about her, and for the first time, Barty wanted to protect someone other than himself.
So, when Lestrange went into her room, he listened closely. And when he heard her cries of pain and fear, Barty saw red and vowed that he would make sure Lestrange never touched her again.
It was almost time for his plan. Lestrange was alone on the floor. It was late. And when Lestrange leaned over close to him and reached for something over Barty's head, he struck.
He grabbed Lestrange by the neck and flipped them so Lestrange was on his back. He straddled the thin waist and continued to squeeze Lestrange's neck with all of his might. He didn't let up on the pressure at all because he knew if he did, it would all be over for him.
He continued to squeeze and squeeze until Lestrange's eyes bugged out, and still, Barty squeezed.
Only when Lestrange's eyes closed and the body stopped moving, did Barty get up. He looked at his wide-eyed roommate, a sniveling Peter Pettigrew, and by the time Barty was done with the small man, Pettigrew was ready to confess to a crime that he didn't commit.
The next day when he saw Luna in the Day Room, he went to her and sat down next to her. He took her hand in his. "Lestrange won't ever hurt you again."
Luna looked at him with clear eyes. "I know what you did. I saw it."
The way she said 'saw,' made Barty believe that she hadn't seen it in person; she'd had a vision. She didn't say anything in reproach and together, the two of them looked out of the window.
