I walk to the door, hearing a knock. You know, I never knew that, that slow knock would change my life forever. Hearing it echo through my mind, my footsteps taking me to the door.
I open it, seeing a man in uniform. The professional look every man in the army carries. His face had no emotion on it what so ever. He handed me an envelope with the US Air force symbol on it. With a salute he left.
I opened the letter quickly to read:
"Dear Mrs. Retherson,
We are sorry to inform you that your husband Pilot Robert Retherson, has been killed in battle. Your husband has fought in this war with honor and glory. We are sorry for you loss.
Sincerely,
Air Force of the United States"
I fell to my knees in the door way, the sun was shining like it hadn't shined in months. The one day it wants to come out. I clutched at my stomach, feeling the deep pit of emptiness inside of me. I had so many questions hitting me at once; "Did he ever get that note about how much I love him? Why me? Why our family? Why now? Why like this?"
