Kenji was helping Kaoru with cooking lunch by mixing ingredients together with a wooden spoon. Over the past seven months, Kaoru's belly had swollen and now stuck out like a camel's hump. Kenji knew this was his eagerly-anticipated younger sibling growing inside her. As the months went by and he thought things over, he became very curious about one aspect of pregnancy.
"Mommy?" he asked suddenly.
"Yes, Kenji-chan?" said Kaoru as she cut vegetables on a cutting board.
"Where do babies come from?" said Kenji, asking the question that frightened parents all over the world.
"Babies come from inside mommies' tummies," said Kaoru. "You already know that."
"But how does the baby get INTO the mommy's tummy?" persisted the diminuitive boy.
"Babies come from mommies' and daddies' love for each other," said Kaoru.
"Love puts the baby inside you?" asked Kenji.
"Yes it does," said Kaoru, hoping this simple explanation would satisfy Kenji's curiosity.
"Well, I love you. Could I put a baby inside you?" asked Kenji.
"No dear. It only works between mommies and daddies," said Kaoru.
"Why? What's the difference between my love and Daddy's?" asked Kenji.
'No way to tell you that without corrupting you, little guy,' thought Kaoru.
"It's just the way it is. Only a daddy's love can put a baby in a mommy's tummy," said Kaoru, really hoping to end the matter.
"Next time Daddy puts a baby in your tummy, can I watch?" asked Kenji.
Kaoru nearly sliced off half her finger.
