Dean Winchester stared begrudgingly at the sign in his rear view mirror.

WELCOME TO STANFORD UNIVERSITY in bold letters, the dark dorm room he knew belonged to Sam was only a few minutes walk away.

he couldn't believe what he was about to do ... To his little brother

Dean had been the only one in the family who still talked with Sam, the only one who remained despite the kid choosing Stanford University instead of the hunt.

Sam was free, he'd gotten out of the life of the hunters ... Only, now he was about to get pulled right back in.

Everything began after his first solo hunt, a call from his father was all it took for this mess.

"Dean, it's me, listen son I gotta disappear for bit, but I need you to do something for me. Go get your brother hunting again."

Dean fought at first, he'd love to have Sammy back by his side and sitting shot gun, but he knew that's not what Sam wanted "Dad, I just can't do that to him"

John Winchester growled into the other connection of the phone, fists clenching "Your brother needs to understand he can't just run off and ignore his responsibilities, Dean. We've given him two years of peace, that white picket fence life he's always wanted, I don't wanna pull him away from that either Dean, but the kid's not safe there."

"How do you know what Sam needs? Hell, how does dragging the kid back into this life keep him safe? We're hunters! We kill monsters and supernatural crap that also tries to kill us every chance it gets!"

John remains silent, letting his eldest vent out his frustrations, scowl across his features "Son, we both knew Sam wasn't going to be able to walk away, there's so much more at stake here, more than we'll ever know."

"That's crap and you know it!" Yells Dean, hands clenched on his steering wheel, engine rumbling in the background "Ever since the night mom died, you quit being a father, I was the one who took care of us, made sure Sam was fed every day, had clean clothes, I did everything that you were supposed to do! And now you're asking me to drag my little brother back into a life that he hates cause it's what you want!"

"I know I wasn't the best father to either of you boys, but I did what I had to do, Dean. This has to be done, yell and scream at me all you want, but just trust me. Something's brewing and your brother is smack dab in the middle of it"

Dean's rants grow silent, brain processing this new information "Tell me what the hell is going on, why's Sam in danger?"

"It's not safe to talk Dean, get to your brother and keep him safe. Use whatever you can to get him to go with you, whatever it takes, you do it." Orders John

"What do you want me to do, huh? Lie to Sammy? Drag him out of there kicking and screaming?" Questions Dean "What am I supposed to do?"

The phones connection crinkles as the call is being lost "Stanford ... protect ... Brother ... Order, son"

Green eyes roamed in search of a point of entry into the sleeping residence, a lone kitchen window chosen as his target.

"Whatever's about to happen, I won't let anything happen to you, Sammy." The window is noisily opened, Dean purposely causing as much disturbance as possible to awaken his younger brother.

Seconds pass before light foot steps can be heard leading into the kitchen, Dean chuckles before lowering into the fridge, he needed a beer.

And there you have it! I had the idea that maybe there was a much deeper reason to Dean going to to Stanford. Also this is my 50th story on here! Thank you all so much for reading, favoriting, following and reviewing.
