Chapter 1

"Jason, come back here!" Michael and his little brother were playing tag. Michael was it.
"You have to catch me first big brother!" Jason laughed.
"Be careful boys." their mother yelled after them. She had decided to take the boys out for a picnic. She didn't want them cooped up in the house all day. And the weather was perfect, and that was a rarity nowadays. She had taken them a good ways away from the town, towards the canyons. That was a good thing. She needed to get herself and her boys out of that place. She hated living there. She had to go. She needed excitement and adventure. And more importantly, there was someone important to her that she needed to find.

As she set up their picnic, an Indian passed by her. She waved at him and he nodded in response. He seemed like he was headed into the canyons. "His tribe must live there" she thought. Their town had been one of the few to make peace with the Indians, so they were always trading and traveling through town. It wasn't unusual to see an Indian every now and then. Not everyone was happy about this decision, but they learned to live with it. Rachael sure was happy about it.

Rachael could see her two sons wave to the Indian too as he passed by. She could make out a small smile on the Indians face as he watched the two boys continue their game.
"You can't catch me, you can't catch me!" Jason teased.
"Just wait 'till I get my hands on you, you little rascal!" Michael laughed.
Jason ran towards the canyon…and stopped. He seemed to be transfixed on something. Michael caught up to his little brother.
"What's the matter, Jason?" he placed a hand on his shoulder. He followed Jason's gaze and watched as three men held down the Indian they had just saw only minutes ago. Another man jumped of his horse, walked slowly towards the Indian, knife in hand, and slit the Indians throat. Michael gasped as he watched dark crimson cover the Indians entire body. Jason screamed at the top of his lungs. Michael tried to cover his mouth before they heard, but it was too late. The men were now looking their way.

The boys ran as fast as they could back towards their mother, screaming for her to run too. Michael grabbed his mother's hand and tried to pull her away, but it was too late. The men had horses and blocked their path before they could get away. There was no use screaming. They were too far away from town for anyone to hear them. They were on their own.
"Evenin' missus." The man tipped his hat towards Rachael.
"I'm sorry to bother you," he continued with a sinister grin on his face. "But your boys saw sumin they weren't 'upposed to." He looked over at Michael and Jason. Jason cried, "Are you gonna hurt us? We promise we won't tell no one mister."
"That's right sir," Michael said. "Our lips are sealed."

"Now what made you think I was gonna hurt ya?" the man, his name was Manny, looked shock.

Michael found that he was holding his breath. He let it out in relief.
"No I'm not gonna hurt ya," the man continued. "I'm gonna kill ya."
