If only one person had smiled,
someone's happiness wouldn't have disappeared,
someone's sorrowful, precious tears wouldn't have been shed,
someone's beautiful, full soul wouldn't have emptied,
someone's sweet, whole heart wouldn't have broken
As a certain fluffy-haired brunet stepped into his classroom, something inside him wavered. His caramel eyes were dull, his tan skin pale, his face marred by cuts and bandages. He'd been late to class so often that even Hibari had given up, simply ignoring him instead. As he carried his bag to his desk, a foot was stuck into the aisle. Tsuna tripped, spilling the contents of his bag all over the ground. The teacher ignored him, continuing her lesson without batting an eye. Tsuna picked up his notebooks and slid out a chair, piling his books on his desk.
Just one smile, if anybody cares.
Throughout the day, Tsuna didn't say a word to anybody if he could help it. Despite that, he felt progressively hollower every time he passed someone. Kyoko - sweet, kind-hearted Sasagawa Kyoko - only murmured a greeting to him. Even Yamamoto Takeshi, the school's always-smiling baseball star, hadn't spared him a glance as he walked past. Tsuna felt tears well up behind his large doe eyes for the seventh time that day and bit them back.
No one cares.
After being harassed yet again for bringing the class average down, Tsuna grabbed his lunch and headed to the roof, where he knew Hibari wouldn't be. As he sat down, he gazed up at the beautiful blue sky above, sun shining brightly through the few clouds dotting the vast blue expanse. Almost unconsciously, Tsuna dropped his lunch and made his way to the fence, pressing his hands to it and staring through. He came to a decision and heaved himself over to stand on the small wall, watching the students on the ground below. Soon, someone noticed him standing on the roof and a scream rang through the courtyard. Tsuna smirked bitterly, letting the tears fall this time.
It's too late to care now.
The door to the roof burst open and a group of people rushed through, staring at him. Yamamoto and Kyoko were first out, coming right to the rusty metal fence.
"T-Tsuna-kun?"
"Sawada?" Tsuna turned around, keeping his footing on the stone wall. Someone behind them snorted.
"It's not like Dame-Tsuna's actually gonna do it." He sneered. "He's too much of a coward." Kyoko spun around, scandalized. Apparently the people below had come to the same conclusion as a loud chant of "JUMP!" split the air. Tsuna spread his arms out, eyes locking onto Yamamoto's wide ones, and tipped over backwards. As he fell, he whispered five words that completely shattered Yamamoto's heart.
Tsuna heard the chanting go silent as he was buffeted by the wind. He stared up at his beautiful sky, stretching out a hand to reach. Through the tears, Tsuna smiled. Brightly but sadly, he smiled up at the beautiful blue. Then the silence was broken with a sickening thud. Then someone screamed. Yamamoto clambered over the fence and stared over the edge at the previously heartbroken boy, set free by the sky. And he remembered the words the small brunet had whispered to him.
"I only wanted one smile."
If only one person had smiled,
a short, bright life wouldn't have been lost.
