Heavy weighs the crown
Sam (Kurt, Blaine, Mercedes); Blaine/Kurt (suggested Sam/Kurt); An "I told you so" of sorts.
Note: This was written before Prom Queen aired.

After Kurt wins the crown, and he puts all those people in their places for messing with him in his own badass way, he wanders off out into the hallway for a break. His boyfriend follows right along behind him and Sam watches them both go. Sam feels this resentment towards that short dark haired Dalton kid – Blaine, he thinks his name is – and he's not exactly sure why. Part of it might be the fact that Blaine keeps randomly popping in to McKinley to perform publicly and to be perfectly honest Sam still can't figure out why he's singing half the time. Although another part of him tells him that Blaine has something he doesn't, something he wants, and he really doesn't want to think about it to much because he doesn't want to admit what that something is exactly.

(Freedom, security, Kurt)

So instead Sam watches Blaine wander out of the Prom following after Kurt, and that's all he's going to do, he's just going to watch him leave and he's going spend the rest of his life pretending not to understand.

That's totally what he was planning on doing.

That is until Mercedes wanders up to him and stand next to him watching the direction the two boys went in.

"You know," she says to him. "Kurt's our friend, so we should probably check if he's okay." Sam turns to look at her and there's something about the way she said it, the look on her face, that makes Sam think that they really should; so he nods.

When they get out into the hall they can hear Kurt and Blaine talking around the corner.

"Things like this wouldn't happen to you if you didn't dress like that," Blaine tells him. "It's like you're asking for it." Sam clenches his fist and starts to rush towards the corner. He's going to hit the boy; he's going to punch him. He's stopped by Mercedes' hand on his shoulder and when he turns to look at her she has this a look on her face that he can barely understand. It's something like confidence, or possibly anticipation. Then Kurt's voice rings out through the hall.

"I'm not going to change who I am for anyone," Mercedes' suddenly smiles and Sam finds himself smiling right along with her.

"I'm not asking you to change," Blaine argues back. "I'm telling you to tone it down."

"That's the same thing," Kurt retorts. His voice goes quieter but there's this dangerous hardness to his next words. "I think you should go home." It's not a question. Suddenly Kurt is walking around the corner and he's smiling at Sam and Mercedes and heading back towards his Prom. Blaine is left to watch him walk away.

"Kurt Hummel is back," Mercedes mumbles. Then she's looking at Sam like she's trying to convey something very important to him.

"Well you two," Kurt begins as he walks in between them and continues towards the gym, and Sam finds his legs seemingly moving on their own to walk side by side with Kurt. "Let's go enjoy our Prom."

Sam thinks maybe everything is going to turn out fine.

(Somewhere in the back of his mind there is a voice telling Sam that now he has a chance)
