Mary's Three Husbands

Mary laughed and shook her head. The three of them really walked out and left her standing there. She picked up the bottle of scotch and poured it in the glass closest to her. She sat down in Lou's chair. Another so-so date with no sign of prince charming in sight. She was starting to think that there was no such thing as Mr. Right.
The office door opened and Lou came back in, closing it behind him. "I've changed my mind." he told her, sitting down across from her. "I will have that drink with you."
Mary poured a little scotch in glass sitting in front of him. "Why are the three of you acting so odd tonight? Especially Ted."
"Ted? That should explain itself." he shrugged. "We were just sitting in here thinking about what it would be like to be married to you."
"Really?"
"Yeah." he took a drink. "Sound odds, I know."
"No, not really." she replied. "Although I must say I can't imagine being married to Ted. Something tells me his ego is even larger at home than it is here."
"Probably." Lou agreed. "What about Murray?"
"Maybe." she said. "If I wanted to be a housewife with a lot of children. Maybe that would have worked for me in the sixties, but not now."
"You would make a cute little housewife." he smiled. "Kinda like June Clever in those floral dresses and vacuuming in pearls."
"Now that surprises me." she told him. "I wouldn't think you would stick me in the role of housewife."
"No?"
"No." she replied. "I would think that you would want us to be equals."
Lou nodded. "You're right, I would." he told her. "I would want us to be equals, but that still doesn't mean I wouldn't want to come home to find you occasionally vacuuming in pearls."
Mary laughed. "That would probably never happen."
"Never say never."
She smiled. "You know I've had a lot of really bad dates recently." she told him. "After tonight I thought I was almost ready to give up."
"Yeah?" he asked. "What changed your mind?"
"You did." she replied. "Maybe I've been looking in all the wrong places."
"And I made you see that?"
"Yes." she said. "What are you doing tomorrow night?"
Lou smiled. "Are you asking me out on a date?"
"Maybe." she replied. "Are you free?"
"I think so, yes."
"Good." she took a final drink of scotch. "We'll have dinner at your place after work."
"My place?"
"Yes." she replied. "We would be equals that way."
"I must warn you my cooking skills are a little limited."
"That's okay." she assured him. "I'll bring the wine."
"Scotch."
Mary shook her head. "Wine."
"Wine it is." he agreed. "Do you really think this could work?"
"You don't?"
He thought back to his daydream about their fiftieth wedding anniversary. "I think it's worth a shot."
