Sunset

Summary: Buffy sits on her porch watching the sun set as she thinks about how, in her childhood, she used to love those precious moments as the sun went down.

Disclaimers: It's Joss Whedon's. Not mine. Got it? >.

Note: I didn't really know what I was writing as I was writing it. It just sorta...came as I went. So it's kind of a short, pointless story. But I sorta like it. )

When Buffy was a little girl, she had always loved to sit outside on her front porch, on her father's lap, watching the sunset. The two wouldn't talk, contently watching the sun go down. Once she asked him if they would still do that when she was older. He had said of course.

However, they had stopped when she was about 12. They were both busy, her with homework or her friends, him with business. Neither really thought their sunset tradition to be very important anymore.

But now, Buffy found herself longing for her father's lap as she sat alone on the porch. Dawn was out with friends, Willow on a date with Kennedy. It wasn't that she really wanted her father. She just wanted to share this moment with someone. With someone who loved her. She had always felt so loved those evenings, even though no words were ever spoken.

She had always thought she would restart the tradition with her husband, maybe even with a few kids running around when she was older. Well here she was, older. 22 to be exact, with no husband, not even a boyfriend. And children? She laughed at the thought of her as a mother.

Then a thought occurred to her as she gazed out at the red/orange sky. Did her father even remember those evenings? She frowned, probably not.

So obviously, she was the only one who appreciated them. She used to look forward to the evening all day long, she would tell her mom and sister how great it was, telling them they couldn't join Buffy and her Dad. It was always their special time together. But looking back, Hank had never seemed excited. Half the time she had to practically drag him outside. Why hadn't she remembered that before? She had been too wrapped up in the beautiful sunset to realize at the time.

Anyway, right now, she decided that the sunset wasn't going to last for very much longer, so she should turn all the thoughts going through her brain off and soak it in.

She sighed, then smiled. Peaceful and suddenly perfectly content to be on her own right now.
