CROFT HALL, HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
NOVEMBER 2005 "The tea is ready!" Hillary, butler of Croft Manor, emitted his shrill voice through the halls of North Wing. Lady Lara Croft, daughter of the late Lord Richard Croft, was poring over an English translation of the Remuqadas Codex. "Hillary, bring it up – I think I'm on to something......" The butler walked sharply up the marble staircase to Lara's all-white room, before placing a mug of Earl Grey tea next to the Codex. "What is it you are 'on to', Miss Croft?" he said in a stern English voice. "Well the Codex seems to be prophecising something......that if I'm calculating correctly, should of happened two years ago. The end of the world." "Yes, well, how many apocalypse-predicting stories, codexes, scrolls, books – making out an apocalypse took place decades ago." Hillary was a not a believer.
"Hillary, this seems to be different from the others. A reason why these events haven't occurred. Since the dawn of men, there has been one girl at all times to save the world from evil, predominately vampires." "Oh god, those ghastly creatures. The vampire in the Tomb of Ferrados in Greece must have been there for two millennia, but still was alive. Thank god I had my walking stick," Hillary mentioned, puffing his chest out proudly. "Hillary, I destroyed the vampire with my stake. I knew a vampire was in there." "Yes, well...erm, what were you saying?" Hillary said, shrivelling up, embarrassed.
"Well the girl of our generation and all of the girls who would of took her place had she died were all supposed to of been killed two years ago, destroying the line. But she didn't, instead channelling her powers through a sacred weapon creating a Slayer out of every girl who could have been one. Instead of one Slayer, the world is now overrun with them." Lara closed the codex and looked at Hillary. "Slayer? Why did you say Slayer?" "Well that is the term most commonly given to her," Lara said.
"And where should this apocalypse of took place? Presumably the area where the girls were turned into 'Slayers'?" Hillary gazed at the world map. Lara noticed where his stare was pointed, and walked towards the map – pointing her finger at the area known as California, USA. Hillary moved closer, and saw her finger was pointing exactly on a town called Sunnydale.
"And that's where I'm going."
