Ari felt a sharp pain sting him.
She was surprised he was helping her, and that hurt. He thought she'd known that it was a game, him and her. That they just played for fun, that he'd never hurt her. Not ever.
But she didn't.
He was holding her cage open, he was setting her free, but she didn't budge. She didn't move. She simply starred at him, confused. And that hurt him. Why did she look so scared? So frightened of him? He knew, because he was scary, he was a monster.
"Move it Ride," he hissed impatiently. She simply gazed, confused at him. He met her eyes, and saw the horrible sorrow in them, the fright. Then he realized, she wasn't that she was scared of him, it was that he was releasing her, and only her. Her bird freak friends would still be trapped, and she wouldn't allow that. Ari sighed, and looked curiously over at the rest of her flock.
They all looked as confused as her. Ari looked at the ring of the keys he held in his hand, that he'd taken from his own father to free her. But now, freeing just Max seemed like a crueler deed then leaving her. So he hastily unlocked the cages to the rest of her family, and silently led them to the quickest escape, a door to an emergency fire escape.
They all filed outside, still dazed by the surprise of their rescue. And as they all jumped into the air, he watched them go, watched her leave him again.
But then she was turning, and landing next to him again. She leaned forward and kissed him softly on the lips. Then she turned and lunged back into flight.
