Mrs. Curtis was having a busy morning, just like she always did once school started. Sodapop, at the age of six, was sitting beside the front door, letting out frustrated sighs as he struggled with his shoe laces. He had learned how to tie them a couple of years before, but with his new shoes, he was having a bit of trouble. Jean Curtis rushed out of the kitchen to help him, just as her husband Darrel walked through the door.

"Kids? Are y'all ready?" he questioned, casting a glance down to Sodapop, then to Darry, who was watching television while he pretened to put his shoes on. "Come on, boys, the truck's ready and waiting outside."

Jean finished helping Soda with his shoes, and annouced, "All done," before she stood to kiss Darrel on the cheek. "Come on, Darry, you'll be late for school," she called across the living room. Darry sighed, but obeyed, jumping up and jogging to the door. Jean gave her two sons a gentle kiss on the cheek and they headed out the door. She sighed and clicked off the television, before walking into the kitchen in search of her youngest son. Ponyboy was sitting at the table, a cute and innocent expression on his face.

"Hey, Baby. What do you want to do today?" Jean asked, sitting down onto the chair next to him, giving him a cheerful smile.

"Well," he started, a suspisious look on his face. Jean noticed the tuny gap between his front two teeth, that caused him to speak with a slight lisp. "First, you should probably fix that." He pointed behind his mother, and she turned, curious as to what was needing to be fixed. Stunned, her mouth fell open at what she saw.

"Oh no, oh no," she mumbled, quickly grabbing two potholders from the counter. Dark grey smoke was rising from the oven, where banana muffins had been baking. She opened the oven, and quickly grabbed the muffins out, also trying to brush the smoke from her eyes. In the rush of getting Sodapop and Darry ready for school, she had completely forgotten about the muffins cooking.

She gave Ponyboy a weak smile, before walking to the trash can and tossing the black-topped muffins into it. Ponyboy looked at her skeptically, and questioned, "What are we gonna eat now, Momma?"

Jean glanced around the kitchen, in search of an answer for her curious son. Finally her eyes landed on a bowl of ripe bananas. "Well," she started, new enthusiasm in her tone. "You could have a banana instead." She took a banana from the bowl, and handed it to Ponyboy. He shrugged, taking the piece of fruit from her. The banana's were very ripe, and had a few black spots on them.

Instead of peeling it, Ponyboy stared at it curiously. After eyeing the black spots on it, he glanced at his mother, and said sympathetically,

"Momma? I think you burned the banana too."
