disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters of Doctor who or anything! The only originality is the details and the thoughts that the lady is having.

"To. The. Doctor." She smiled faintly as she quickly scribbled the words onto the first page of the book. "Funny, that's what he called himself_" the sentence got stuck in her throat as her eyes widened in surprise. Her eyes drank in the tall lanky figure in front of her as her eyes registered his angled facial features in resemblance with the slightly more softened features, sketched onto the pages of her great grandmother's diary. He looked as if he hadn't aged a day even though it had been more than forty years since he had disappeared from her ancestor's history. However, she registered the dark anguish and darker emotions swirling around that warm brown eye that was never seen in the rough ink drawings.

"Was she happy, in the end?" He whispered so quietly that it took her a moment to process the question as she closed her mouth and the details on the hardback's cover suddenly seemed very interesting.

"Yes." She replied a bit louder than intended as she looked up and smiled uncertainly. "Yes, she was." she looked down at her hands and looked back up at him once more. A thousand questions lay at the tip of her tongue, but she chewed them back and released only two whispered words.

"Were you?" She searched the brown orbs for any trace of happiness that her great grandmother so wished for her dearest John Smith. The silence built between them became thick and heavy as he reached out a hand to slide the book from her grasp and tucked it away in the side pockets of his large trench coat as he turned and walked away, not looking back. It was then that she registered the weight on his shoulders as he walked away, the certain slump of his shoulders as if to say he had seen and witnessed things he didn't want to see and has dangerous secrets that must never be told. It wasn't until later during the day, that she realised two things; one, he never answered her question, and two, the Doctor did not look happy..
